I was wondering if the fuel pump rewire is needed if you are running a Walbro 255hp fuel pump? I know it is recommended with the stock pump....

Going to run the Aeromotive A1000 with the 255hp. Keeping the 14b for a while but may eventually upgrade to the 16g. Just need to know if the rewire is necessary.

Better yet, if I do the rewire with the stock pump and change it to the 255 later, do I leave it rewired, or change it back to "stock" wiring setup?

You do not need a rewire. I ran my 16g on pump gas at 20psi with no issue on an unwired 190lph. I now run a 255lph, no AFPR or rewire on e85 at 30psi. E85 needs 30% more fuel delivery so Im flowing a lot more fuel than a 16g ever will on pump gas. My afr has never gone lean at wot so I know I still have fuel left.

You should rewire it anyways no matter the set-up just to be on the safe side

I was able to run my scm61 at 21psi on a 255hp without a re-wire on my old 7 bolt. I didn't run out of fuel or overrun the stock fuel pressure regulator until I turned the boost above 24psi, after that I installed an FPR and rewired it.

Do you have any problem with cold starts? Ever since I installed my wally 255lph fuel pump without a rewire or afpr it takes awhile to start the car when it's cold out.

You dont "need" a rewire. I suppose if you like it when your fuel pump tone changes when your turn signal flickers thats cool too. Check out the flow differences. Keep in mind 1g wiring has shown to go far less than 12.5v
RRE Instructions
I dont get why people are so reluctant to rewire the fuel pump. Its cheap, piece of mind and increases flow quite a bit. It should be done on the stock pump

The benefit of a rewire is to help maximize and stabilize the flow coming from the pump. With a larger gauge wire, you get higher current, and that helps to keep the pump up to the task of providing more fuel as you increase boost pressure, which is what raises your fuel pressure requirements.

The afpr will also help to stabilize your fuel flow, but helps more with no/low boost situations, where you are likely to run rich on a 255 since you will more likely than not be overrunning a stock fpr.

All of this is about getting a stable tune. If you set up these components properly to begin with, it's 2 less variables to fiddle with as you try to get a safe, reliable tune established.

Good post:hellyeah:
The 1g wiring is so small gauge that it has an issue feeding a steady amount of current as well.
I know many people wouldnt skimp on sound system wire. Why would you do it to your fuel pump.

Thats because in supras, the 12V mod caused premature fuel pump failures.

I will end up doing the mod after I get a aftermarket fuel setup. If you run a direct connection to the battery (with switch and a relay), would the turn signal still affect the pump?

It is from the voltage dropping when certain accessories are working. With the rewire, you bypass everything and it keeps a solid current
I have never had a fuel pump failure in a dsm in 6years. Ive only bought to upgrade and have run all my pumps rewired.
Walbros seem to last well too

Toofast,

Doesnt a vendor make a rewire kit for people that are not electronics smart like myself?

If you can hook up the rewire kit, than you can make it. Its just a relay and wires and crimp connectors. Im not very electronics savvy myself. If you've hooked up a radio, youll have no trouble, probably even much easier
On my first dsm, i bought one off of ebay that worked fine. this time i made a trip to auto parts store for the relay and wires.
Im sure some of the major dsm vendors sell them too

I got some 10awg wire and I will grab a relay from my local electric store and put this together.

Thanks guys.

You do need an AFPR with the 255, wired or not. That hard to start thing, that's because you're running rich. Even if it's not affecting the way your car runs, you are running rich in low load situations without having an AFPR.

Yeah. I'm going to instal the AFPR and rewire this weekend since were going to have good weather :hellyeah:
