Fuel Pressure Regulator?

I searched but didn't really find anything about this, and/or links down.

->I installed the Walbro 255lph HP fuel pump about 10 years ago, and I rewired the fuel pump directly to the battery with an inline fuse and thicker wire as per the tutorial that was going around way back when.

->Yesterday, I learned from reading a comment here that I should have been using a fuel pressure regulator with this pump.


I would love some help deciding what regulator to get, and any warnings or advice. My profile lists the mods I have.

I have the Chilton's repair manual so I've got some idea of what I've got to do, but I don't really know how they work yet. Can I just get an adjustable one or what? They come with a little meter? Can they auto adjust for idle, or ...? Recommend one?

The adjustable one is the one you need to make sure the 255 isn't flowing so much fuel into the fuel rail that your fuel pressure gets higher than what you want it to be. Fuelab and Aeromotive both make good adjustable fuel pressure regulators. They usually come with pressure gauges, and you use this to set base fuel pressure, which should be 43.5psi. Once you've hooked it up, it will automatically change fuel pressure during idle, and under boost. All you need to do is set base fuel pressure.

I'm looking around at prices, I have no idea if this is a good price or not, but it's all a lot more expensive than I hoped. Just want to make the right choice and not get ripped off.

I heard somebody talking about a 1g fuel rail ...is that something I need to be worried about?

You don't necessarily need that kit you linked, unless you want to upgrade the fuel filter and line that leads up to the fuel rail. The fuel pressure regulator is after the fuel rail. This is more of what you would need. It is a little expensive, but its needed to make sure you know precisely what fuel pressure you are at when tuning. The stock one just isn't designed to flow enough to bypass the amount a 255 can flow.

I went with an Aeromotive I got off of the classifieds on here. It works great! Don't go cheap, the gauges usually break then you are in the same spot as before not knowing how much fuel pressure you have moving around.

EDIT: what does -6AN mean, is that the max value or something?

The one (talonDSMerr) linked is good. 1g, 2g, it really doesnt matter. It think they might have an option on some sites that sell the FPR to choose either one. -6an means the size of the fittings, -6, -8, -10 etc. You would be using the -6

I've got the STM kit, uses a Fuellab mini AFPR. It's a very nice kit uses all nylon AN lines.

I kind of like the stainless steel look, but I did hear that the nylon is easier to work with? It's got to be easier to trim, if necessary.

I like the idea of the fuelab regulator having color options, but having choices makes it harder to pull the trigger (decide to buy).
