I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow and I was gonna pull off a fuel level sending unit off another 1G dsm, my only question is, Are they all the same on 2wd models? (1.8, 2.0 & 2.0T) I know it's different on the 4wd cause they're under the hatch on those models.

Ok so I'm bringing this thread back to life because I'm finally going to fix my fuel sending unit. It's always caused the gas gauge to be off by a quarter tank, from researching on this site it sounds like the floater rod inside the tank is possibly bent... unless you guys suspect something else?

Now since I was never able to get my hands on another FSU I need to know, am I able to work with the one I have? Can I just bend the rod back if it is bent?

I took the first step and sprayed the hell out of it with PB blaster, as you can imagine it's pretty rusty down there. I might do it a couple more times before I even attempt to remove the screws.

You might be surprised, my screws actually came out pretty easy.

As far as if you will be able to bend yours back into place, you won't know until you get it out and look at it. Are you sure it's the fuel gauge unit itself? If you have ever pulled the needle off on the dash for installing new gauge faces it could just be the needle that is off. I guess you'll find out soon, right?

Well I've sprayed them with PB blaster about 4 times now so hopefully that should do it (just in case) I really don't want those screws to snap on me.

Yeah I'm sure it's the FSU because I've filled my tank completely full while I had the dash/gauge area apart. After I filled the gas tank up I manually moved the needly to the 'F' with my hand and it just gradually went back to the 3/4's mark.

- EDIT -

Just realized you said "pulled the needle off" hmmm.. I didn't know you could actually pull it off, and the last person who owned this car did put aftermarket gauge plates on :hmm:

I would put money on that being the problem. In order to install those white gauge faces/overlays the needle has to be pulled off, the gauge installed, and the needle pushed back on. If the needle wasn't lined up properly, your gauge will be off. If I were you I would fill your tank all the way full, pull the needle off (don't just turn it) and push it back on with the needle pointing a little bit to the right of the full line.

Yup that's exactly what I'm going to do, just got done telling someone that in my other thread Easiest way to grain gas tank? LOL

If it fixes the problem I'll post an update
