No, you can just pry it out with a screw driver and drive a new one in.

What about the front case gasket there is no way to remove that without doing that.

You can put it in without droping the oil pan or removing the front case, its just a bi*** to do so. In my opinion you will come out with fewer busted knuckles and a lot less swearing by just pulling the front case and oil pan.

To replace the front case gasket the pan will have to come off, the strainer will come off, you will have to unbolt the balance shafts and then it will come off.

You can put it in without droping the oil pan or removing the front case, its just a bi*** to do so. In my opinion you will come out with fewer busted knuckles and a lot less swearing by just pulling the front case and oil pan.

It literally takes 5 minutes to pull the old seal and install a new one without removing the front case. That is a WHOLE lot more work that doesn't need to be done.

unfortunately the oil pan was leaking oil also so now the pan is dropped and the stupid car is all wheel drive so now... had to drop the transfer case as well... all for this damn seal and water pump. -_-

Make sure to use rtv on the oil pan instead of a gasket.
