Fried ECU

I have a 90 GSX and while it was idleing the engine just shut off by itself and smoke started pouring out of the ecu. I can most likely get a replacement one but before I do I wanted to know if this could of been cause by something other then the ECU. I just want to make sure so the new one doesnt get fried also. Oh and while I was driving earyler that day the ecu was making clicking noises every so often and all of the warning lights came on.

Hoping you guys might have some ideas on why my cousins 1993 Dodge Stealth/3000gt AWD is frying ECUs. He ran out of gas and thought that was the problem but filled it up and it didn't run so he took it to the shop and they said his ECU was fried so he bought a used ECU off EBAY and he said that one fried too. What all do I need to have him check? I read that a bad ISC could cause it to keep frying, is there anything else and if so where might it be located.

It really helps to see what's burning up. Like DSM ECUs the 3/S ECUs suffer from leaking caps and it's very likely that any random ECU off eBay is likely to be leaking just like the original and he may just be killing them from "natural" causes. Short of that the most common cause is a bad ISC but a short in any of the solenoids/relays can cause the drivers to burn up.

They were saying it won't cold start very well and once it starts it idles real high and I think he was saying after a little bit the rpms will start to drop and the car dies. Am I wrong in saying those are real good symptoms of the ISC controller going out?

yeah i have a 90 eclipse gst, and i just bought 2 ecus, one for 250 and one for 330. burnt both of them up as soon as i put the negitive cable on. big sparks. i know rite away that it was burnt out. so my question is, is were the short could be. i ohmed my maf, tested good. i ohmed my isc and that tested good. i took out all the solenoids but the fuel pressure on. tested my maf and isc harness, and all of them tested all good. so i stuck. i have no factory boost guage, and no air flow signal. it sucks. were else to i look?

When my ECU blew, it was the fuel relay that did it.

Any of the drivers in the array can burn up if you short it to 12v. The ISC is just the most common because it tends to got bad more often than anything else.

Since the engine bay end of the wiring usually have 12v and the driver wire together leaving any disconnected solenoid connector loose is asking for trouble. Get the connector wet and you may be looking at ECU work.

Which is driver is for what on a 2G depends on which version of the ECU.
