was wondering what were sings or warning of a fried ecu. i have a 99 gsx, with a 95 eprom ecu and dsmlink. just put a 6 bolt in the car, there was a big load of spark somewhere and while trying to charge up the car to start it, smoke came from the inside somewhere :confused: anyways, found out that i had a bad alternator and replaced it, and there is no longer a big load.....

the car starts on its own and drives fine until u get into boost. it seems to be running a TON of boost and does nothing with it, as if it has a huge boost leak. have not yet boost leak tested it.

im really hoping that my expensive ecu isnt done for, anyone know of any symptoms of a bad ecu? would the car drive just fine without boosting if it were bad?

if the ECU is bad, it will smell luike fish or just burnt shit. take it out and look at it, but your problem is weird. ur symptoms sound klike burnt valves (not that thats your problem because it would have no coorilation to what happened). id take the ECu out, look over it and if u see anything funny, post a pic of it. if u see noting strange then do a ompression test and a boost leak test. give us an update when u do this to tell us wat u found out. :thumb:
 
ill have to boost leak test it, when i get off work. it didnt smell bad when we saw the smoke, just smelled like a little smoke. and i hate to talk about honda's, but when my friend fried his ecu in his prelude, his car wouldnt even start let alone run. are our ecu's different in that sense?
 
burnt valves?? hmmm, open to other ideas as well. just trying to get some idea of what to dive into once i get off work today..........

mine starts, but turns off right away :D , Ive got a leaked capacitor, spilled all over the mainboard, but itll start, and then you hear a click, and it turns off, or somethimes it goes click crazy, awaiting to pick up gvr4 ecu today.
 
looked at laptop when i got on it, still builds alot of boost and does nothing with it. and now i want to know if anyone knows why it goes back to base timing at wide open trottle??
 
You need to set your base timing with the CAS. You can ground of the brow tan plug near the battery and then set it with a timing light.

Also while your at it, pull out the spark plug wires and make sure your sparking good on all cylinders.

If you fire some wires it is possible to hurt the ignition driver in the ecu, and you wont get good spark.

MY MONEY IS ON TIMING.

Also do the boost leak check.
 
I have been doing work on the car. The timing is set at 5 degrees. When you go to wot the timing goes to base. The car runs like shit because of it. I can post a DSMlink log if any one wants to see it. The car also knocks sometimes it's strange?
 
I checked the the "ground timing" box on the dsm link and used a timing light. I know that it's timing. I can see it go to 5 degrees when it should go to 17-19.
