Free Mods?

My friend just recently picked up a 1997 GS-T. After seeing this another friend mentioned free mods, referring to things you could do for little or no money. What are some things you could do with the engine to increase performance. He mentioned rerouting vacuum lines among some other things that I can't remember right now, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.
