I went to drive my car last night and i wasnt getting anyboost and there was a weird noise coming from my engine so i pulled off my intake tubing and low and behold my turbo was screwed. One of the impellers was missing a big chunk out of it. I havent had time to look at the exhaust side but im guessing its really screwed.
Should i dump it? Rebuild? New turbo, my buddy says he can find me a 50trim for $500 but he doesnt know the brand.

I would find out what ate this one first and once you know that, send it to Forced Performance for a rebuild. Even if you can get a 50 trim for $500, it's nowhere near the turbo that a Red is.

Hope that helps,

Andy

This is advice that i just currently got from a buddy that works at a local dsm shop... I was looking at a FP red rebuilt and their opinion was not to waste my money and to go with a diff setup... Not saying that the turbo isnt proven.

Personal experience he had was he bought a RED rebuilt and threw it on the dyno boosting 20psi and he said it started smoking ect.. The turbo blew.. They say that the turbo after its rebuilt is a hit or miss but from experience around the shop he said he wouldnt pay more than 200 for what i was looking at.. I still want to buy the RED, but i will ride out my 50trim for now

Your case it may be diff so i will let others chime in... Goodluck -

FP is one of the best shops around. They wouldn't be hit or miss. And your buddy probably didn't prime the turbo before boosting, therefore, it's his fault, not whoever rebuilt the turbo.

Dont listen to that guy because he doesnt know what he is talking about. A Red is a much better turbo, and FP is miles ahead of technology and quality than AGP or PTE or other companies that make 50 trims. Dont get me wrong, 50 trims are pretty decent turbos but I would run a Red any day of the week over a 50 trim.

So the consesus is for me to send it off to FP. I have no clue what could have caused the turbo to fail since i was not the one that put it on. The previous owner of my car did. Could not priming the turbo result in shaft play which in turn would cause it to rub against the housing untill it broke a piece off?

I would get it rebuilt, That turbo can handle alot more then you probably could give it. Not priming the turbo is making the the turbine run "dry" and not be lubricated by oil.
