I am going to run a FP black. I do not know if i should get a journal bearing or a dual ball bearing? I know with the dual i run less oil and it is a better turbo over all but what else? If i run just journal i run more oil and i need coolant i read? Some help clearing this up. I plan 500-600hp goal on my 2.3 stroker. I would also like to know if internal or external gate is better? I will be street driving car some track. I would like to know what is best for turbo. Thanks :thumb:

Your are correct, ball bearing turbos require little oil, so an oil restrictor will be needed when feeding off the oil filter housing (unless they are building them in to the housing?) Yes, it will need coolant for a ball bearing.

Journal bearing CHRAs need more oil. Each turbo will have a recommended operating oil pressure. You'll have to talk to FP for that info. Journal bearing turbos don't NEED to be water cooled, but I personally would never run a dry CHRA.

An internal wastegate will work just fine, but I would go external if you plan to run big boost. I have an FPGreen with an internal, and I do not like the boost control above 20psi. The wastegate is adjustable, but I'm switching to an external setup this spring.

As far as journal bearing vs ball bearing... That really depends on how much you wish to spend and if you really need better transient response.

1. You lack the supporting mods in your profile, unless you dont update it

2. You are debating a ball bearing and a journal bearing as well as an internal/external wastegate... So you are debating if you want to get a ball bearing turbo, but not sure if you want/can afford an external wastegate?

3. Do at least a little research.

The internal will prob blow open in the low 20s and you will loose boost at higher rpms. I had to get a holset wg actuator fabed for my internal 71hta. Problem solved.

500-600hp on a stroker?

HX40 in a bep bolt on housing. I would suggest external gate off O2, recirculated or dump (depends on your preference). You are going to need to run 28-40 psi (depending on compression and cams etc...)

I dont see many FP Black lasting that long in a 35+ psi setting. It might be user error. Improper oiling. Not sure. But the failure rate does seem to be higher than Holset turbos. I just saw a rebuilt HX40 Pro with coated bep housing go for $500 a few days ago.

FP Black JB - $1300 and $2000 for BB

Ask the evo guys how the journal blacks were. They only make bb now

So have been doing a little more research on hx40. I'm going to run it external off o2. Then i have also been reading holset turbos have great spool with BEP housing.

I wanted to know how some have there set-up? Also looking for pictures? Any input on this will be great. Thanks

I would go external gated if you plan on running higher boost levels. For the fp black I would go bb if I was to get it. But you have to think about rebuild cost on a bb vs a journal bearing turbo. I run a hx35 in the bep 55ar. Now as far as holset reviews and pictures there are several threads like 10 pages deep with results and pictures and whole setups along with power numbers. Just search holset turbo results.
