Found a 95 gsx with an evo3 16g and a fmic. Did a 6 bolt conversion from a 92 tsi 35k ago he's asking 2500 for for it. Don't have a computer at the moment so I can't post photos, but it seems pretty straight, very little rust. Is it worth it?

buying any modified DSM be prepared to do lots of maintenance. I would give a thorough inspection. Check the dipstick, Compression test, leak down test if possible, drive it and make sure it makes boost like it should check vacuum at an idle too. If its on stock cams id expect between 18-20HG. Make sure the trans shifts good and clutch isn't dragging.

Thanks! He also just told me the car started overheating a month ago. He claims its not the head gasket. It has an aluminum radiator that was installed last year, any idea what it might be? Is it still worth 2500?

Now I would do a coolant test. You can buy a kit to check for hydrocarbons in the coolant. They will tell you if the head gasket is bad. More then likely it isn't the radiator being the problem unless the fans aren't adequate.

The fact that it has a FMIC could be the reason it's overheating. It blocks air to the radiator and sometimes you need to a bit of work to stop it from overheating. I'd also check the coolant lines to make sure they aren't lucky, if they are don't let him know that. They are cheap and easy to replace.

Check around the throttlebody and the heater core for the smaller hoses. The radiator hoses can leak as well obviously but if they were leaking most likely he would have noticed.

I'm not much of a knowledgeable guy when it comes to the turbo model's but to find a GSX for $2500 I'd take it any day. Granted it will have things to fix and replace, it's an old car that's what happens when they are not maintained they eventually need some repairing. GSX for $2,500 + throw in a couple grand and you'd have a good car IMO.

First off, let that car run till it gets to operating temps. Drive it, get into boost and see if that temp needle starts to climb up also look for white smoke and water out the exhaust. It depends. It shouldn't be overheating due to the fmic. Whenever a dsm starts to overheat, its usually low coolant or a blown headgasket. IMO, I'd buy it, do a complete gasket job on it, send the head off to be checked and go from there.

Must have ecmlink to turn off the check for random misfire code or it will scare you when the car throw this code. The car will stop accelerating until you switch the car off and then back on.

2500 is not bad though if the body and tranny are good. Motor is cheap to rebuild to stock glory

Okay, okay. I'll be the devil's advocate. $2500 is a great price. That and the cooling system on a DSM isn't rocket science and can be easy to troubleshoot.

But

If you watch craigslist then you will find that you can pick up running GSXs with minor problems for about $1000-1500 if you are patient. (I just got one for $500 that needed piston rings and one week later watched another go by for $800 and it was CLEAN!
$2500 is semi regular for a car that hasn't seen a lot of money in investment or maintenance.

If you do go buy it, tell him you are looking at 2 others and don't go above $2000! The deal isn't unique so don't be afraid to threaten to walk away.

I agree, do a head gasket test, also check for rust around the strut tower bars and underneath.

I wish the market for a GSX was like that around here. I bought mine completely stock for 4500 and I waited months for one to come up in the listings. GS's go for more than 1500 here LOL.

There is a great site, searchtempest.com, that I use to check the whole east coast (anywhere 500 miles from DC) for GSXs for $500-1500 in just a couple minutes. I usually do the check daily 'for fun' as a part of 'checking the internet'

2g's rust in the rear wheel wells and the under the spare tire too. pull that sucker out and get stabby on any rust with a screw driver. If the screwdriver goes through, then you can't save that section and would need replacing. Otherwise, it's surface rust and be chemically treated before it gets worse.

Good luck! Let us know if you buy it!

Bought it for 2250, the fan is the issue, should be a cheap fix. It ran fine as long as it was moving. The strut towers were getting rusty and the paint isn't great but I work at a body shop so I'm not overly worried.

Any suggestions on what fan I should get? Its stock right now
