Allright, I found an great deal. A 45 ish guy who is moving to denver is selling me his 97 gsx. 130k :(
here's the mods:
super 16g turbo // 9lb flywheel
02 snsor housing // Centerforce hd b.b. clutch
exhaust mani ported// unorthodox underdrive pully
k&n intake // 650cc injectors
greddy types bypass valve// magnecor 8.5 ignition cables
greddy intercooler pipes // walbro fuel pump
greddy prfec2 b.c. // apexi gen 2 super afc
3.0" apexi drunk cat-back // 2.5" cat
exhaust temp gauge // a/f and boost gauge

So I'm wondering what problem areas to look for in this car. I forgot to do that test I read about, the one where you drive with the ac on then stop and rev it... something to do with valves?? I'm not a newb when it comes to cars or turbos, but I'm not an expert at dsm's. I drove it and it seems to be in good shape...turbo's a bit laggy for me though. He also showed me how the use the super afc.
how should relibitly be?
Any help would be really appreciated.
thanks,
david

It is all dependant on that particular car.

The super 16 is going to be much laggier than a normal 16G family turbo, more of a 20G type spool (3,700-3,900). Reliablity is lessen with the addition of all the performance mods. If it drives good and all the normal checks go good, buy it and just be sure that you will have to replace something at sometime.

But isn't that typical of all cars!?!

Reliability depends a little on how well the guy took care of it in the first place, I guess. So if he said he serviced regularily then it will probably be ok. And older people are usually very good about that stuff, so I'm sure it will be fine.

Yes, that and if he complimented everything with eachother before beating on it.

Honestly man i'm not going to lie to you. That car is pretty damn fast but with 130k on the clock your going to be replacing stuff ever so often. If it still on the stock 7 bolt you might have some decent life lef tin it if it wasn't beat on but with a 16g i bet it was beat on. I wouldn't pay more than 6k for it but it would be a nice car to have.

yeah, got it for 5,100 with all the stock parts too.

turbo put in at 105,000
timing belt and water pump and all fluids at 110,000
I didn't get the impression that he beat on but you never know... one more thing, he said dsm's have a little problem in first. when your at a stop it doesn't like to go into 1st gear very easily, so you have to put it in 2d then 1st? normal?
thanks

yes dsms with bad transmission tend to do this....
not a real big deal, its not uncommon to hear this

It shouldn't go in 5k miles, but it can if he beat on it cause he knew he was selling it then, no.

Just start putting alittle money into the savings for repairs is all.

My GST was like that too. After I changed the clutch/flywheel and changed the tranny fluid. I added in the shifter bushings underhood/undershifter. It falls in 1st gear really easy now.
