Aright, i am about to be the proud owner of a 91 GSX. The engine and tranny are not in the car so i am going to be rebuilding this engine before it goes in. My question is, if i dont plan to go crazy with the mods (just enough to hit low 12's maybe high 11's, but still have a decent streetable car) will i need to venture into the rather expensive realm of forged Eagle pistons and Manly connecting rods. i want to do a copper .06" headgasket as well, unless someone thinks it would be useless. Let me know what you think. thanks

I also have the opportunity to install a 2.4L block as well. ive heard it is a bi*** to tune this with the 4g63 head. (those of you that have done it), Is the hassle worth it??

You can reach low 12's high 11's easily with a stock 6 bolt as long as it still has good compression numbers and you spend the time to tune it correctly so you don't have any knock, ping, detonation...things like that. If I were you I would just rebuild it with 1g Big rods and 2g pistons for a little more compression. You could use a stock headgasket with some ARP headstuds and you will be just fine. If you want to use an MLS headgasket you will have to get the head and block checked for straightness. Cometic makes a good composite headgasket that it very nice and nicely priced. As far as forged internals. They aren't a must if that is all you want to do but if you are going for more then yes I would recommend getting Eagle rods and a set or Wiseco or Ross pistons. It all depends on the tune. I had seen some 500hp cars run high 11's with big 60 trims and I have seen EVO 3 16g's run high 11's. Just depends on the time you wanna put into it to do it right the first time.

**Edit**
You can't really install a 2.4L block in a 1g dsm. You can use the crank and make a stroker motor but that require's new special pistons with the wrist pin higher on the piston. I would just stick with the stock 6 bolt 2.0 and check it over real good before you start building onto it. As far as I know as well you can't put a 4g63 head on a 420A block. Won't match up. Whoever told you that must have meant something else.

As long as you have a good tune a stock block can get you there. Now if you are like most of us you will want to go faster, that's what the speed bug does to you. If you plan on making a lot of runs with the car you might want to consider building the block as it will be stronger and take more beatings. Also i know a lot of people are in those times with a MLS head gasket. My goals are similar to yours and I'm most likely going with a built block, but i plan on going faster next summer too. Good luck.

If your goals are low 12's to high 11's stick with the oem stuff. If you do some research you'll quickly find out that 1st gen 6 bolt motors are good for about 500hp with proper tuning of course.

Another Question I Have Is What (if Any) Are The Advantages Of Going With Swirl Polished Valves And Titanium Springs And Lifters?? I Have A Decent Amount Of Auto Know-how But I Am Coming From Workin With Little Or Nothing (95 N/t) To This. Any Recomendations Before Coming Together Would Be Appriciated.

Also, What Good Or Bad Can Be Offered About Using The Sheppard Racing Reman Trans Instead Of Oem. The One I Was Looking At Was $895 I Believe, I Would Add A Act 2100 Clutch.
