flywheel/starter problem

i have had my 90 tsi in the shop for a while now. The car was ready to start for the first time today, but it wont start. Th mechanic said that the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. I bought a awd 1g flywheel that had been lightened. It bolted up fine so I figured it would work am I missing something or do i need a new flywheel?

You might need a replacement starter. The pinion gear may not be moving out and catching on to the flywheel to crank it. Get the starter tested.

The two flywheels each have a different radius, the FWD being larger and the AWD being slightly smaller. The bell housings on the transmissions are going to have different starter bolt-hole positions. You should reinstall a FWD flywheel of the appropriate year, make sure you lock-tite the bolts, and use a torque wrench, NOT AN AIRGUN. Get it resurfaced while you're at it too.
