Car not starting, Starter / Flywheel Problem???

First, let me give you some information about the car. It has been down for approx. 8 months. I had a 6 bolt motor in it when it last ran, but, have since went back to a stock 7 bolt. The motor was known to be good and running. Anyways, I'm using the stock ecu w/ stock injectors, etc... Everything is stock minus a boost gauge, air filter, and exhaust.

The other night, I attempted to start (for the first time) this "new" 7 bolt motor in my car and when I turned the key it made the noise like it was starting to kick over. A friend was watching the engine bay and said the motor was turning but after a couple tries and a few seconds later a spark ignited from the rear of the motor. From then on, when I would attempt to start the car, all I get is what sounds like the winding noise coming from the starter, but it does not turn the motor one bit.

I have since taken the starter out and tested it. It kicked out and turned.
I took the dust shield off the flywheel to check if the teeth were all grinded up. They appear fine.
I have turned the motor manually to make sure the motor wasn't locked up.

What could be causing this problem? It seems like everything is working correctly.
 
BTW, the car is FWD 5spd.

I'm thinking at the moment (although, I certainly hope not) the flywheel is from an awd. My buddy gave it to me thinking it was for a FWD (he had like 4 in his garage). Is there any way to check if the flywheel is a fwd or awd flywheel with the flywheel installed in the car?

Also, is it possible the motor would turn over a few times w/ an awd flywheel, but then eat enough of the tops on the teeth to where it won't even engage the flywheel at all now?

Pull the lower flywheel inspection cover off and you can check the flywheel issue urself, just a thought.

I guess what I'm wondering now is, whether or not there's a way to tell if I have a fwd or awd flywheel installed by looking only through that shielded area.
 
that happen to me on my 2gen it eat up my flywheel and i had to replace it! so be carefull make sure everything is dont and tight before you start you car becuase you can cuase more damange. i am changing my starter right now on my 1gen awd and damn is it a bi***... more work less room to work with but good luck hope you got your car running..
 
You have the wrong flywheel AWD and FWD are different, AWD is smaller.

EDIT- Didn't read that post correctly, I don't think there is a way other than checking the clearense between the flywheel and the tranny.
