flywheel/starter clatter/noise

Just change to prothane mounts but don't think that is the cause of this because it was there before the mount swap but now it is much louder.

Climbed under the car it seems to be coming from the flywheel. It is a loud clattering noise that is not repetative, it is very loud at start, and when you kill the car it is loud again until the engine stops spinning. you can also hear it at idle but more noticable at the other times.

Could this be a starter not disengaging all the way and hitting the flywheel the whole time the car is on causing this noise?

There is no visable damage to the flywheel from under the car veiw.

So there's no performance difference or vibration just noise? Try checking the tc bolts as i think it's the only thing you can get to or see under there. I guess it could be the starter i just wouldn't think it would still work after a few runs like that. Cracked flexplate maybe but the trans needs to come out to check that.

well i found the problem. Cracked flex plate. And on the way to drop it off the tranny lost it's 2 low gears... This is depressing!!!!

Sorry to hear that man. Makes you wonder how something like that happens, it happens but not very often. Good luck getting it back together.

It's all good, I just got a 90tsi awd 5 speed with a rebuilt 6bolt and a rebuilt 94 tranny. Hoping to have it running today.
