O.K I did a little searching and couldn't find anything on this subject. I'm working on my girlfriends 98 GS-T auto. There is a grinding noise coming from the tranny area. I decided to pull the starter off and found that the flywheel flex plate bolts were grinding against the lip of the starter. The two starter bolt were tight so I was wondering if i'm over looking something small or if this my be signs of something else....crankwalk maybe.

try to tightin the clutch bolts. and maybe it has been taken off befor and whoever did it forgot to put that thin metal plat back on that goes in between the motor and the tranny.

He said the car was auto so it has no clutch. You can however remove the access plate from the bottom of the tranny to tighten the flex plate bolts. If that isn't it the crank may have walk quite a ways. However, I have never heard of crank walk that bad on an auto.

It ended up being the rear balance shaft. We pulled the oil pan and found a ton of metal shavings. I did a BSE with the motor still in the car....that was no fun LOL. About 10 month later the motor threw a rod through the block.
