Hey all

Have been thinking about buying a 1998 Talon TSI AWD with a auto tranny (no big deal) body is perfect so is inside. KM's are a bit high 230,000 but have accsess to a 1998 -1999 JDM talon/Eclipes with only 32,000km on it.
I really do not know all that much about these cars and was wondering if you can tell me some pointer on what to look for and what type of upgrade are best or are there different engine swaps I should look into.
I would like to keep it an auto tranny as my GF would like to drive it.
Any help would be great
Cheers

Look for the usual, any leaks, anything broken, e.c.t, make sure it drives good good, runs good, e.c.t. Shock tower rust is usually the deal breaker on a 2G. Look for rust there and anywhere else. Don't bother with engine swaps. you could do a 6 bolt swap from an early 1G if your a crankwalk worry wart, but crankwalk is overrated, and you have a late model 2g so your good there. Do the maintenece before your mods, and then check out the upgrade path.

Make sure it shifts good, feel out the suspension, strut tower rust is somthing u wanna check, and avoid, make sure it don't smoke to bad, and if ## Gonna swap motor do a 6 bolt, and just like D said do maintenance 1st, timing belt, water pump, head gasket, etc

A JDM Talon, really now?

What he's saying is there are no JDM Eclipses or Talons...

There are some threads on what to check. As far as the mileage on the one, as long as it compression is good, it looks unmolested, and the turbo doesn't have a ton of shaft play, I wouldn't worry about the mileage. My car has 227K on it and I drive it 80 miles a day... Check the fluid in the trans and smell it to see if it smells burnt and see if it's red or brown or black. Check for strut tower rust, spare wheel well rust, take it for a drive. Make sure the car is cold when you get there!!!!!!! Do not have them warm it up prior to you getting there. Sometimes trans issues go away when the car is warmed up. Take the car for a drive and see how it drives. Check for leaks, get any service records you can, see if it's been modified at all... Best of luck. :thumb:

Depending on the power goals, a 6 bolt might not be the best option. If the car is a 98-99, check to see if it has the split thrust bearing. That pretty much eliminated the crankwalk scare and is the same design that's in the EVO's. So, the 7 bolt might be better depending on goals because the rotating mass is lighter than a 6 bolt and the split thrust bearing gives it the same chance of crankwalking as a 6 bolt.
