i recently bought a 97 eclipse gsx and planning on installing some mods. here is a list of what im thinking of getting. I mainly want to increase hp and boost while keeping my engine safe. If anyone has recomendations or more ideas that would greatly be appreciated.

1.Blow-Off Valve
2.Catback Exhaust Or just a muffler
3.Headers
4.Fuel Pump
5.Spark plugs
6.Cam Gears
7.Down pipe
8.Cold-Air Intake
9.Manual Boost Control
10. Boost Gauge(maybe A/F gauge)
11. Fuel Injectors

On your gsx there is no header. Just your exhaust manifold. Also doing a cold air intake on this car would involve alittle more work and usually most people who do that mod have a FMIC, as where the SMIC is where they route the pipe and filter. Other then that your list is pretty easy and achievable. But also remember new fuel injectors would require something to control that extra fuel your trying to make use of.

First off, don't get the cam gears right now, as they wont be of much help at this point until you get very deep into tuning. Also, if your planning on throwing in bigger injectors you're going to need something to tune them with (SAFC, DSM link etc.) or its gonna run terrible. And for an A/F gauge don't just throw in a gauge as all it is is a pretty light show. Get yourself a wideband 02 sensor so you can tune better. Also, depending on what tuning system you're planning on getting it may be helpful to get yourself a datalogger. (Lots can be found on EBay for good prices)

You need to start off slower. Start with an intake and exhaust, downpipe. Boost gauge, boost controller. Then some kind of tuning device (SAFC), bigger fuel pump, injectors.
You can find a lot of good info if you search some.

If your car has no mods right now let me give you a BIG helping hand.

Your very first mod should be a boost gauge. Right after that get a good logger such as pocketlogger. These two items will benefit you more than anything else as you are starting out. You need to be safe before you need to be fast.
Also reading and research are key. there is an upgrade path located right here on this very site. follow it. also before you can start throwing parts at your car you need to have a goal as to what you are trying to accomplish.

Cliff notes:

1. BOOST GAUGE
2. LOGGER
3. RESEARCH + READING

be safe, do all your belts and filters. timing tensioner water pump the works. BS removal or just cut the belt. do all the "Free Mods". afterthis its all gravy.

depending on $... i would go to Autozone er whatever, buy a MAF adapeter and a 4in filter + a boost gauge= less than $100. order your self a boost controller and BOV, buy an EVO BOV off ebay (its a direct replacement)= another $100. Ebay 3in Cat-Backs go for around $150. downpipe would be next, and then it all depends on how much power you wanna put out and how much $ you got.

Two great pieces of advice. Along with doing all the maintenance FIRST!

I would just say follow those, search and read. Whenever you plan on buying a specific item (such as a boost gauge), come back here, search, and read up on it. If you don't know which one to get, see what other people have asked about. If you do, search for the specific item and see what's here on it. And, if you find no other thread about it, start one and we'll help out.

Good luck!

Snowborder's right. For just about anything you can think of doing to your car, someone has done before and has more than likely started a thread about it. You can learn a lot from the guys around here with a lot more experience (I'm still in the learning process). Also check out http://vfaq.com/ It will help you with questions that you might have about upgrades as well as installation. Good luck and enjoy!

Im going to be the 5th person to say this but...mantainence first!! Your car won't be fast if it doesn't run right. Boost leak test, when what the last times those plugs and wires were replaced? Knock sensor? o2 sensor? Boost guage and logger is a must. Then MBC would be a good start. But definitely first and foremost, mantainence. Dont know how many threads are there on this site that stresses that fact. And also even if its not broken yet, we are talking about 8-18 year old cars here, when you start modding it, the weakest link will break.
