so ive been searching for about a year, for a 99 eclipse gsx. been researching the car for so long and ive pritty much been stuck on this one car for as long as ive had my license. well i finally spoted one up on Craigslist and went to go take a look at it, and its in amazing condition, and its the one with leather interior and all. there are no problems what so ever, drives really good, shifts like new, sounds great. dude told me its been pritty reliable also (witch is good condidering i hear alot about how dsm arnt reliable). so i offered $6,500, going to go pick it up Friday, my only concern is how will i pass inspection??? there is no cat of corse and its set to 15psi so there no way im passing at the dmv. any suggestions? i would really like to get the car on the road Friday when i go pick it up in the morning. should i just go to DMV and fail just so it gives me those 30 days to drive at least?

by the way i live in south jersey (08060). i have called a few "mom and pop" shops that do inspections and they all seem pritty solid on the rules of inspection. any suggestions as to were i should go, or what i should do? i have been dieing for this car for about 5 years now and i really wanna get it on the road the day i get it so i can cruise around all day. haha thanks for the help!

haha this is my first post so sorry if i posted in the wrong spot or something, im very new to the forum but i will get the hang of it sooner or later.

I never had to deal with inspection but I thought as long as your ecu check engine light was not on and the car " looks Safe" you will pass?

If the car is throwing a cel for rear 02sensor because of the deleted cat I would look into the fuel fouler adapter mod... This will get rid of that cel and all else should be good..

i called and i think thay said them car had to be older then 1996 or 1997 i dont remember. but yea its a 99. and im really trying to pay for the sticker, but if i cant find a place to do it then i guess im out of luck.

so your saying take it to dmv and get the extra 30days so i can drive legal then do the fuel fouler adapter mod? im sorry but as you can tell im really new to dsm's and im new to the car game in general, so exactly what is the "fuel fouler adapter mod"

That sucks that you have to be inspected..Depending if he just took the cat off and replaced with a test pipe..Or he has a cat deleting downpipe and exhaust..

deleted downpipe and exhaust. so idk what my options are. i know this is going to take more then a day now that it think about it so i was just going to go to the DMV i guess and have then fail me so i can drive 30 days legal and in the mean time hit every small shop that does inspection and hope i get some luck. i know there is a way around this. i always hear of people just buying the sticker but i have no clue how to go about that

I can't find the tutorial on dsmtuners but if you follow this link, you can see what iam talking about.

You really should just get a list of the codes that the car is throwing and look into what it takes to fix it.. youcan also purchase the ecu scanner from a autoparts store or have the seller take it there and get a print out.

Dont just go and fail because if you fail for the catalytic converter then you have to have proof that it was replaced when you go back again. I live in south Jersey also and when I was running a test pipe on my car I just threw the stock cat in and reset the ecu a few days before I went, that is one option for you if you can find someone with a stock system you can use. Now I used to go to the inspection station in Delran and all they did was hook up to your ecu to check for emissions, no looking under the car or sniffer test, but I think that one just got shut down. With that said you may be able to use an O2 simulator or try using the old spark plug non fouler trick to get rid of the cel, so that you can pass when they hook up to your ecu.

thanks a lot. hopefully this helps. i really didn't wanna mess with the car for the first month or so, but if i cant get it to pass i might have no choice but to do this. i don't remember if the check engine light was on or not. but idk if it isnt on (im sure it will be on) maby i will get lucky and pass, i guess i will find out Friday morning.

I would do it right and get a different DP and put a cat in there. If you really want the small power gains of having the cat deleted, you can always swap it back on after inspection. Or if not you can always sell the cat delete one for some of your money back.

thanks man, yea i didnt even think of that before you said it. seems like a better idea. i just talked to the guy selling it to me, he told me he can get it inspected for like $100, seems alittle over priced. what seems like the better deal, givein him $100 or trying to pass by replacing the cat (im sure i can find a oem cat at one of these junk yards in south jersey)? is it worth the work or should i just go ahead and pay him an extra $100 and wait another week to get the car so he can get that inspection sticker

im kinda likein the way it sounds right now and i was trying to hold off on messing with anything other then maintaining it. but everyones kinda saying the same thing so i might just put in the man hours and go look for a OEM set up and swap it for inspection and then swap it back after i pass, just kinda seems like a lot of work for a 10 minute inspection.

You have to look at it long term, you may spend a little time swaping things over but after you pass your good for two years.

I was wondering which one you were looking at, I seen that one the other day. It looks clean and well taken care of. Did you ask him if he has the original exhaust?

and he told me he doesn't have the original exhaust. and yes its very clean, looks much better in person. i talked the the guy and he seems to know his DSM's and hes taken very good care of the car, he showed me all his receipts for everything he's purchased for the car. and i took it for a test drive and it drive very solid, feels real good, shift nice and smooth, feels like a brand new car. he said he never beats on the car and has only raced it a few times and he seems like he's telling the truth. and he is running the 16g turbo at 15psi so i shoudnt have problems with the turbo going anytime soon.

i see you live in Burlington, i live in westampton, takes me 5 minutes to drive down 541 into Burlington. haha i dont know of too many dsm owners around are way.
