I am buying a shell that is spotless but absolutely gutted. The price is good and I know its alottt of work but its clean as a whistle. So because my Gs-t or GSX is a 97 the firewall tag will say Mitsubishi and its not some fab shop welding in motor mounts into a 420A correct and doing a vin swap or something insane just wanted to be certain:hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm:

OP, you are asking how to make sure it is a legit GS-T or GSX and not a 420a n/t? First of all you do not just swap in motor mounts, the motors are 180 degrees different and it requires to swap frame rails etc. Second if it is AWD it is a GSX.

Now there are 4 VINS I believe.

1. drivers side door frame
2. engine bay
3. dash
4 title

As long as all those VINS match you are good.

If it is a Mitsubishi, the vin will start with 4A3xxxx
The 5th digit will be for drivetrain : "F" for FWD GS-T or "G" for AWD GSX

The 8th digit will be for engine code, "F" or "U" for 4g63 Turbo

The 10th digit will be the year S(95) T(96) V(97) W(98) X(99) There is no U for year designation, it was skipped in all autos in vin designation.

You can also check on edge of hatch and hood or doors and theres a white and red dsm sticker with vin number printed on it to verify vin match in case parts were swapped out.. match these with the vin on dash just in case they swapped out dash from a junkyard or something.
I have to verify this on all cars we inspect sometimes to make sure its all original or not stolen etc so they match the title of the car. This is a big deal with DMVs guys believe it or not. I hope this helps out.

Im glad to see it back to green, since you're one of the more knowledgeable very active members. So now people will trust you more LOL

Good to hear you think that. It's been a long few years since april 2011 when i first got my dsm, my dsm was the first and only car i ever did anything mechanical on :) ive come a long way :sneaky:

Ive basically spent the past 3 years researching dsms and dsm related things every single day for hours LOL. I guess it explains the post count. I dont use Facebook or any social media so I'm just on here most the time. My fiance hates it LOL

Haha I get bugged all the time for always being on tuners LOL. Although I'm usually just reading like a mad man.

As for the OP, you would certainly be able to tell if the car had been swapped from a 420a. I wouldn't be concerned about that, just make sure the title is clean.

Maybe I need to start spending all my days on here while I have the free time away from my fiance LOL. But she doesn't mine it too much, as long as I don't spend all day on here reading. It's a great place to learn from though. Too bad you moved from whidbey I could have learned a lot from you.

Yeah i live in canada but I'm american LOL

Hense the pacific northwest dsm club region LOL.

Lol ok , but genuinely thanks for the help. Sometimes I am in a rush when I type so the grammar and punctuation is usually horrible not to mention I program computers so characters and punctuation are used totally different LOL .

However in essence you guys answered my questions the pretty thoroughly . I knew the motor mounts would not line up but I did not know the frame rails were in different places. The shell is entirely empty but it great shape , not being destroyed by salt ,or rot so its a pretty good find.I will be getting it and transplanting my car to the new donor. :thumb:
