It's not unless there is a short when the fan kicks in. I doubt the fan is your problem but if you think so unplug the fan relays (don't just unplug the fan in case the relay is shorting) and see if problem goes away (just don't overheat the engine). Can you restart the engine right away when this happens? It sounds more like a sensor malfunction or heat related component failure (eg. power transistor, coil, etc). Does it always happen when engine gets to certain temp?
 
Yes, when the car shuts off, I can start it back right away. But whenever I put it in drive, it dies. I have to wait an hour or two so that the car cools down, and then I can put it in drive.
