What is the failure rate on a 1g computer, I am looking to upgrade the computer on my car for more tunability, and am unsure as to whether i should go with a standalone like megasquirt, AEM, or haltech, or go with DSMlink. I'd rather not put the money into a stock computer if there is a pretty good chance that it will burn out or fail.
Anyone have any input on this topic, or suggestions on tunability?

Failure rate of a 1g dsm ecu is actually pretty low when maintained. Every last one of them will need the capacitors replaced eventually so if it is done before leaking occurs, there should be no failure. As far as capacitor replacement is concerned, consider it just a typical maintenence process.

Well for one I think your talking about ECus as computers. The DSMLink doesn't replace the ECU. There is really no justification for you to use a standalone unless you are planning on modding your car pretty well. Also there is no predetermaned "failure rate", if you are so worried about the ECU crapping out then send it into http://www.ffwdconnection.com/electronix.shtml and have them recondition it for 250$, but if you want an engine manegment set up then get the socketed 1G eprom ECUs that are rebuilt and get the DSMLink software and a logger for it.

I have no problems with R&R'ing the computer on my own, I just wanted to see if it was worth it to work the stock computer over a standalone unit. I know that the more load you place on some of these solid state devices, the quicker they fail. I plan on taking the car as far as i can I am looking to make a nasty car i can still play with on the street, and use on a day to day basis, not an all out track /trailer queen. I just got the car, so i still have to see what mods the previous owner added to it, and if it is a eprom computer or not.
Thanks to all for your input though.

LOL what a f'in ripoff 250 bucks to "re-condition" an ECU profiteering is what that is...
I had my ECU "re-conditioned" AND socketed for 20 bucks by a professional @ A local electronics store...
250 bucks... disgusting!

I agree, $250 is alot for a recon on an ecu. You could get ann eprom, have it socketted and caps replaced for that.

Anyway, you can make a trailer queen with a stock eprom ecu with no problem. I currently have a chipped eprom and my car spends a lot of time on a trailer. Not that I need it but I do have it so I use it. It should not be a problem getting well into the 11's with a stock ecu on a daily driveable car. If you need to go to a stand alone system for that performance, you need to learn a tuning process before hand. The ems or dsm link is just a band aid for your tuning issues at levels before that.

My 1g computer went out when I got my car. Turned out to be the caps (almost always the caps on a 1g). Cost me around 75 bux for new caps done by a friend and she was up and running in no time. If i was you i would find an eprom ecu, socket it, cap it, and get dsmlink and you'll ride off into the sunset!
