Hey guys! I am new to DSM's but have always been in love with them! I finally had an opportunity to purchase a 95 GSX with no body damage; It has a brand new tranny and I just rebuilt the top end. New head gasket, hoses, belts, plugs, etc.

Anyway, I took the vehicle in for an emissions test today and it failed miserably; The HC Readings were at 2.6452 and the limit is 1.2; My CO readings were at 80.0312 and the limit is 15.

Im a manager at a car dealership and have been given various answers from the techs about why this might be happening. Im scared to have them work on it though. I was curious about any input you guys may have.

Thanks

Sorry about that guys, I've been busy with work and got sidetracked. There are relatively no mods on this car. I just did a new performance head gasket and arp head studs. The super 16g was on it when I bought it. After the first emissions test we replaced the cat, which lowered the readings but not enough to pass

post pictures of the engine bay to help us find out whats going on with your smog tests.

my first recation was that you had a bad cat, but since you already replaced it, thats out.

does the car run/idle okay? where is the rpms at when your car is stilling still with the engine on?

any smoke coming from the tail pipe when driving?

Check your ignition timing. That's a big deal for CO levels. Also, it would be wise to change spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, oil, Pcv valve, clean your egr valve, and check that your vacuum lines dont have holes in them. All of this should be done when you first purchase a car to ensure maintenance is up to date and will help with emissions. I've always done this when purchasing vehicles before an emissions test and have never failed.

The car sits at about 1,000 when idling with the engine running and the idle seems normal to me. I havent noticed any smoke coming from the tail pipe. I have put up a pic of the engine bay and a picture of a black piece of something that looks out of place to me. Im fairly new to this and not 100% sure what I am looking at.
