I took my 91 Eclipse GS Turbo through the New Jersey Emissions. All the safety had passed fine. Even with my tires so-so. For the emissions portion they put her on the dyno and ran the OBD test.

My results:

Emissions Results
Gas Standard Reading Result
NOx 1045 67 Pass
HC 136 309 Failed
CO% 0.76 10.10 Failed
CO2% 7.8
O2% 0.7
RPM 0

It seems to run rich. When I started my tune up on the car, I replaced my spark plugs with Bosch Platinums and the old ones were black from carbon build up. I also notice that the tail pipe from my exhaust is very black and spews black smoke from time to time.

Now, what can I do to lower my CO and HC? I'm thinking my sensors are off and my ECU is not calculating correctly.

You may want to get a new catalytic converter, my car failed emissions and I put one on and it cleared me with flying colors.

Ya I would change your catalytic converters first. I ran straight pipes in Hawaii....no emissions test......but when i got back to the mainland i failed really bad. Once i put the cat back on and the muffler and all i passed with flying colors.

check with your state emissions requirements or whatnot and see if they have a thing about your car being lowered ...in my state if you car is lowered they give you a wavier and you dont have to take it ....

Running rich itself will cause high high CO emissions. There could be several problems. One, your O2 sensor isn't working properly anymore. Two, high HC emissions comes from ignition misfire due to excessively lean or rich air/fuel mixtures. And in your case it would probably excessively rich air/fuel mixtures. Anyway of lowering the richness could fix your high emissions. I wouldn't start with a new cat just yet but check your O2 sensor or anything else that can cause rich air/fuel mixtures, sorry I don't have time to list all of them right now, got school. Hopefully this helps, if even a little bit.

Been running regular till I found out that I should be running premium in it. Didn't run it too long with regular, but I don't know what the previous owner was running in it which might be the cause of my slight idle problem that comes and goes.

I'm gonna try and run a few tests before I start replacing and spending money cause my wallet is really tight right now. I'd rather not spend the $80-120 on a new cat to find out that wasn't the reason.

I've spent some time looking at my O2 sensor. Took me awhile to figure it out. Using my Haynes manual, I did their test for it. First test taking the #2 pin to ground failed. My volt meter did not register any voltage from the O2 sensor after letting it run for a good 5 minutes.

I also found out that my coolant sensor might be bad. I did the test for it and it doesn't register anything. Right now I'm going to have to pull out my ECU to test if just the wire, sensor, or ECU is bad. If the wire is bad, my manual does not have a wiring schematic for it. If I need to replace the wire, I'm in need of a shop manual. Is there an easy place to find one?

which manual do you have I got the chiltons' and it has all the wire diagrams in it. Not sure if haynes has on in it or not. ? But can get those at any car parts store. Just make sure it says on the front or back that it has the diagrams in it.
