factory engine bay paint

I just wanted to know if the engine bays on our cars come just base coat in the engine bay from factory, or indeed have a clear coat.

My color code is P88 cayenne red pearl metallic and i have the sherwin williams mixed crap already.

I would assume it's a single stage (base/clear in one) because it would be quicker and cheaper.

I am pretty sure it's single stage also.

Id spray some semigloss clear on it to make it stay looking fresh.

I took paint off with ease last night on accident with some simple surface prep... single stage wouldn't come off that easy would it?

it can. it really all depends on what you were doing. you also have to think about how old the paint is, what kind of temperatures it sees. i took paint off of a 30 year old valve cover with some Super Clean (degreaser), without even really scrubbing.

to the OP... i would think that it is probably single stage, but it could very well be just a base coat. flip a coin and pick an answer

What is that surface prep?

its a chemical generally used for cleaning a surface before painting, it removes all of the grease and contaminants... I found it also works great for 3m double sided tape, which is what I used to mount the fuse for my amp, I don't know if im going to keep it where its at, thats why I taped it instead of screwing it in.

From past experience, surface prep won't take off paint that has a hardened clear coat on, or mixed (single stage), however, it will take off an bare base coat with ease.
