What's up everyone, I've got a bit of a question. I'm thinking about getting an all black full paint job on my red 97 GS soon, and the problem is, I was wondering how in the world am I going to get my engine bay painted? Would I have to take almost every engine component out of my engine bay to get it painted? I don't think that I would want an all black, clean paint job, then open my hood and it's outlined in 14 year old red paint . If anyone has ever gotten a paint job on there 2g, or actually does proffessional paint jobs for a living, let me know how yours went down, and if you painted the engine bay or not. Just looking for ideas/suggestions. I'm open to all responses, I'm here to listen and learn. Thanks.

To do it rite you need to basically take everything out of the engine bay. Here are a few pics from when I did mine. Its a 1g but same process for any car.

Your going to need to remove the engine in order to do this correctly.

yep the motor will need to come out to do it the right way. dont cheap out bc it will look like poop later and you wont be happy with it at all.

Yessir, you will have to take everything out of your engine bay. it is a pretty big job, but is not TOO hard. As long as you keep track of everything and where everything goes. Investing in a box of ziplok bags and a sharpie and a roll of tape will go a long way.

don't listen to anyone... Just buy a couple of cans of spray paint and go to town, with a trained hand you won't even need to tape stuff off..... J/K LoL.

First,Cyclonekid. I love the cheap booth setup!!!! i wanted to do that but im in an apartment complex and people are nosey. :thumb:

But yes,eSCAPEist_ If you want to make it look right, the motor and all under the hood needs to come out. Unless you want to look like most honduhs i see around here. fresh looking paint on the outside, until they open the door and forgot the door jams, Basically, make it right, dont maaco.

It will be time consuming, and you should have another ride if your gonna do it. I always thought black and red looked evil.maybe try to figure out how to combine the two colors to flow within the engine bay,and then that way you wouldnt have to paint the bay.

And also,if you do decide to tare into the bay, You could also match paint parts if need be, clean up the components in the process, and maybe even tuck some wires and fix ones that may break. I would say if you have another ride for a couple months or less depending on if you've taken out a motor before,do it man! Take your time, make it clean.

A fan of black,I would love to see the finished result. Good luck on your decision, and we will be here for ya man!

I was infuriated reading this, then I got to the end and laughed.

iF you want to make it look as clean/professional as possible...

Make sure you remove or at LEAST, mask off the brake/clutch lines... Ive seen countless paintjobs where people paint over them and IMO it looks cheap.

Clean em up and spray them black later if their extremely dirty, just please dont spray them the same color as the bay paint...

Proper preparation is what shows off most in the end...

I painted mine and put a clear coat over it, but the clear coat came out like crap. I didn't set up a temporary paint booth and everything stuck to it which sucks. Can I just lightly wet sand the clear coat to take off all the crap that stuck to it?

Wet sanding it will smooth it all out, but if there is something dark stuck in it, you will still be able to see it.

How about if I remove the top layer and then wet sand?

it would depend on how deep the debris is embedded into the clear. That would most likely make care of 99% of the imperfections though. :thumb: The rest would likely not even be noticeable.

Do I also need to put my input on this? Nah, I think everyone answered your question already.

Good luck and pics when you're done!

Oh, OP... What type of equipment are you going to use for this project? Or is it done by a shop?

Ok thanks, the paints was perfect and didn't attract crap to it just the clear coat did. Hopefully I can get it to clear up as I just dropped my motor/trans back in and im not tearing it back out.

Ueah, you should be able to sand it off and buff it enough to look good with the engine/trans in the bay. Good luck. :thumb:

What would make anyone think they could do a quality job with the motor still in it? LOL
