Car has been running and shifting fine. Backed the car out of the driveway, went to put it in first and the shifter would not move over to the left or right, I could only go up into what seemed like 3rd and down into 4th.
Pulled the cables off the linkage at the trans, and had the same result. I could not raise or lower the “shift finger/interlock” assembly. Just rotational movement.
Pulled the trans and tore it down thinking It broke a fork or a rail, as soon as I got the mid case apart, and started moving the forks around inspecting, the issue freed it self up. There’s definitely some wear on the sides of the forks where they ride on the interlock/finger. But I’m not actually seeing anything broken.

Anyone see this before? Where the 5/R fork just get stuck/jammed up the interlock?

I have another set of forks from another trans I’m thinking about dropping in to be safe but it has similar wear on the 5/R. I’m kinda stumped and nervous to just put it back together.

So I’ve been knocked the role pins out of the forks, and removed the rails. The fork detents all look good, the 3/4 fork on the interlock has similar wear.
Fork/interlock 1/2 look good.

The interlock and finger assembly look okay? I don’t have much to compare it to though.

I’m not finding anything obviously broken or worn other than the forks themselfs unless I’m not looking where I should be.

Still kinda hesitant to drop some rails in and call it good without finding a definitive cause.

Took another look at the 1/2 and 3/4

3/4 is also pretty beat up.

1/2 doesn’t look like it’s been touched.

Interlock and finger don’t look worn much at all

Per the manual it’s calling this the interlock/finger assembly
Unless I’m reading that wrong.

And I know theyre the rails, but they too have a “fork” portion.

The actual “fork to synchro hub slider” portions show no signs of wear what so ever. Not on the ends or the center. Top or bottom.
The synchro rings, hubs, sliders and gear sets on all three shafts look fine, no chipped teeth or wear marks. Granted I have not removed everything from the shafts to look at thrust surfaces. But no real play in anything that seems like it would be excessive.

The “poppet plugs, springs, and balls” for the rails we’re all there, knocking the roll pins out of the forks and removing them from the rails, the fork detents between the rails were all there with no damage.

What manual is that? I dont recognize those pics. The interlock I'm speaking of rides up on the 3/4 and 5/R shift shafts. It has a pin in between them that must ride in certain detents for the rail to move. This prevents two rails from moving at once.

That is from the factory service manual.

I know what part your talking about, a little rounded barrel detent that ride in the fork on the rail, and can only be pushed into one rail at a time so the forks can’t move at the same time.

Those detents in the forks, look perfect, and so do the cups they ride in on the rails.
