F5M33 AND F5M31 All in one????????

ok, I have a 99 GST 5spd. I yanked the tranny to redo the synchro's and shift forks, etc... I noticed on the bell housing, it has the F5M33 stamp. BUT.... On the tranny casing, it has the F5M31 stamp. Is this normal, or has someone done work to this before? Also, when ordering synchro's and stuff, would the parts be different, or are they the same in these tranny's????

That's weird mine is the same way and I thought it was pretty strange. The F5M31 and F5M33 are nearly identical so the previous owner could have blown a gear out the side of the transmission and just swapped in the new case. The F5M33 came in the turbo FWD cars and the F5M31 came in the non turbo spyders. I would swap in a rebuilt AWD transmission in FWD mode if I were in your situation but that's only because I know I will one day have an AWD car again. The gear ratios are slightly different between the two FWD transmissions and I don't know how to figure out which gears you actually have. I would also assume that the turbo trans is stronger than the non turbo trans.

its actually funny because i noticed that too. my car came with a real 31(2g spyder nt) but I later swapped to a 33 when it couldn't handle the torque anymore. The 31 doesn't have anything stamped on the bell housing true story
