I have a 93 1.8 automatic that is toast. I hadn't done much research but a friend had a 93 2.0 tranny and it looked identical and since it was newly rebuilt I thought it would work, or at least would be worth trying. It didn't work
So I found a guy that had a 94 and he said a 93 and 94 are interchangeable so I bought it. I expected the trannys to have the same numbers but they have different numbers stamped on them: My bad 93 1.8 has F4A222 MPE stamped on it. The 94 1.8 tranny has F4A222 MPF5 on it. The 93 2.0 has F4A222 MPE1 stamped on it. (All LOOK identical).
At the last minute I got cold feet (because I had just went through this with the 2.0 tranny)and started asking around and salvage yards claim a 94 and 93 won't interchange. A place that sells TCU's also says they don't interchange and even changing the TCU won't help.
Another guy agreed that it won't work because the 94 tranny needs the 94 TCU and even though the TCU does not communicate directly with the cars ECU, it does however share engine sensors and that's the problem... according to this guy the sensors are different and if I would also change the sensors to match the 94 TCU ... the 93 ECU wouldn't understand the 94 sensors. Lastly, I can't even go further by changing the ECU too because he claims the harness is different!!!
Through all this though, the guy I got the 94 from still says it will work, not to pay them any mind, but THEN said I might have to swap TCU's as well and in fact he claims to have done it himself before.
Now I'll go through the swap if I have to ... and of course post my results, but I was hoping someone had experience in this matter and could advise.
The only thing I know for sure is that changing the tranny's only for 93 2.0 and 93 1.8 does not work ... it doesn't shift right then goes into limp (safe) mode by locking into 3rd gear. The 2.0 tranny is still in the car...sure would be nice if someone told me for sure that changing the TCU would make it work! I'd have to buy one and don't want to waste the cash since I was told it won't work.
Also, what is the difference in the tranny's? All of the F4A222 (1.8's and 2.0's) that I've seen look identical except for the last part of the code stamped on it. There must be some sort of internal difference ... but what?
Any help would be appreciated.
By the way, here's a helpful site to determine interchangeability of all types of eclipse tranny's ... (note the site's part number for a 93 1.8 and a 94 1.8 are different from each other and different from all others which seems to substantiate the salvage yard claims that a 93 1.8 tranny and a 94 1.8 tranny are their own beasts and will not interchange with anything else).
