I just picked up a 91 gsx to use for parts to fix up my 90 gsx, but the 91 has a better body, no rust, few dings. The 91 is auto and the 90 is a 5 speed. Which should I keep? I could do the auto to manuel swap, but I dont really want to. Could you guys help me find some pros and cons for both auto and manuel? I'd like to keep the car auto and get a high stall converter, ipt custom high stall, and the shift kit and put my big 16g and 3 inch exhaust on how would it take that? How would that compair to my 5 speed with act 2600 and streetlite?

Autos you can build boost off the line "power braking", you dont loose boost between shifts , Manuals u cant build boost off the line, and you loose boost between shifts.
Autos are boring to drive/but convient in traffic
Manauls are fun to drive/ a hassle in traffic
Autos you hear your blow off valve 4 times
Manuals you hear your blow off valve 5 times
you be put down and hated on by 95% of the people cause u have a turbo automatic.
5% of people would probaly hate you or put you down if you have a manual turbo.
I have a automatic, right now it sucks...thinking about converting it to 5speed, or build it up with some ipt parts, or my favorite line "sell my car and buy a 5 speed turbo car" Cause u see turbo cars everywhere, all the dealerships in this world at least have 20-35 turbo sports cars in thier lots!
I say keep it auto, build it up, kick some Auto haters azzez!

Personally, I love driving my auto AWD. I used to have a 5-speed w/ACT2100, and got the automatic on a whim just to try it out after driving a Grand National. I really don't think it's any more boring/less fun to drive than my 5-speed was, and my transmission is still completely stock. It's a blast pushing down the gas and just going with no slowing down for a shift. But, I do have a 14b, 450cc injectors, manual trans cams, and a manual trans ECU, so it pulls better once it gets into boost than a stock auto would.

So, what I'd do is, take the injectors, 16G, exhaust, and ECU out of your '90, and put them in the '91. You'll have to swap two pins on the ECU wiring harness to make the '90 ECU work in the '91 (I just did this a couple weeks ago because I had an almost new '90 EPROM ECU laying around). Ignorant people will give you crap for driving an automatic, but screw 'em, I've never heard about somebody with an automatic DSM having to lay off the gas and ease their car into second gear because their transmission is shot ;)

I went from a 5 speed 2100 act very modded turbo to a a/t turbo as well. Granted the manual was more fun, but now I can just throw it in drive and cruise. Almost as fun to drive, as I miss manual, but the a/t has more then paid off.

Oh and a/t's not only launch with good boost but they only have to spool ONCE, you dont "blow off" when the car shifts. Now if you let off the throttle then you do but in a drag run youll only let off once at the end(twice if your fwd and doing a burnout).

Im swapping the engines from the 90 gsx 5spd to the 91 gsx auto. So I should pull the manuel ecu out of the 90? Could you please explain or contact me at eclipse1gracer and help me?

Does the '91 have an engine in it already?? There's some minor differences in engine pieces, and having the other engine there to grab stuff from will make it much easier. I'm sure I'm going to miss some parts, but when I put my '90 engine into a '93, I used the entire '93 intake manifold, since it had all the right electronics and throttle body, I had to find a '91 oil filter housing, the motor mounts are different from manual to automatic, and I think I had to use the '93 water pipe...

and yes, I'd pull the ECU out of the '90. When I first got my motor in, I still used the automatic ECU for awhile, and there was a definite increase on the butt-dyno when I finally got a manual ECU in there.

hey dude keep the auto! and check to see if you have eprom. i have a 91 and i have eprom. then your one step closer to dsmlink! :talon:

I just wanted to point out, since someone mentioned it, that "no-lift-to-shift" and stutterboxes make for off the line boost, and boost right in the next gear in manuals.

sorry coup i believe your wrong there ...the shudder box help with spooling the turbo luanching a manual car and keeping the turbo spooled between shifts and dosent allow the bov to "blow off" because the throttle is never shut. but boost is only built under load...and no matter what your call it shudder box or whatever ..the clutch is not engaged and the motor is not underload. for some reason coup i dont think you've ever driven a auto turbo car have you? now getting back to guy who started this tread i have had autos and manuals and yes the manual cars are more fun to drive because you can luanch it from the get go and you dont have to buy and install a h.s. converter which cost around $700 or so ,but look at a manual a good clutch is about $400 and will last you a long time with some luck now look at getting the tranny built for a auto if you go thourgh ipt $2900 dollars ,a manual $1800 (i think) though shepard .....but now considerthe fact that even if you are damn good manual driver and can launch well you still deliever a shock to the drivetrain with a manual car , with a auto (and i thought about this for a long time before deciding to use the "parts auto car" i bought to drag race)the shock is much much less since the load is always there and thus less parts breakage(axles mounts and such) think about this there is a thread on nabr about crankshafts breaking at the number 3 main because of the luanches(shock applied buy the slamming force of the clutch.now that i've said my peace "come on coup and flame me about the sh#t and get it over with so someone else can post something worth being said.........."

Please do not post things you do not know anything about. I had a stutterbox in my 2G, and when you floor it and it pegs at 5k, the motor is put under a load and it builds boost.

kthxbye

The motor is not UNDER LOAD. Stutter boxes seve 2 functions. 1. it allows you to launch with the throttle wide open, which alows quicker spool up once the motor is under load. 2. some setups reduce igniton timing and work similar to "anti lag" systems in rally cars. The only way to put some sort of a load on an M/T is slipping the clutch. Still with most of these systems, you'll be seeing less than full boost on a launch. Even most bone stock a/t's can muster a full boost launch. I'm not saying that all a/t's can muster a crazy launch stock, but with a few modds they come up with pretty good launches even with the stock t/c's. On a cold winter day, I could chirp all 4 tires and pull 1.81 sec 60' times on the stock converter/big28 setup in my 95 TSi awd a/t when I had that car. I'm not agreeing with Awoler either, beacuse he seems to pulled some shit out of his ass, but the a/t's do seem to have some advantages over m/t's. The poor old auto has proven to run 9's which is faster than 99% of the cars on this board, so it can't be all that bad can it?

coup if it was under load youd be rolling foward ....duh.... :thumb:
