My '99 GSX needs a new exhaust system (or some repairs to the current one).

In the past 2 years I've already put about $600 into the exhaust system, having pieces replaced or welded/patched (like the "mid-exhaust" or the "flexor"), but it still leaks and I assume falling apart elsewhere and it doesn't seem worth keep trying to get it fixed piecemeal anymore.

I'm interested in any suggestions for a whole new exhaust. I assume everything from the engine on back but maybe the downpipe is OK? The car is pretty much stock, no major upgrades.

Although I'd love to get more horsepower my primary concerns with this are (a) price and (b) not getting something very loud, as opposed to doing this as an upgrade where HP would be the primary reason for doing it - I'm really just trying to keep my car running and be able to pass state inspection. Any HP upgrade would just be gravy.

Any recommendations appreciated. I'm not a gearhead so bear with me.

Not too loud would be tough without keeping the stock muffler or using a silencer. Both restrict power.

I would get a Megan Racing o2 housing, download pipe with the exhaust shop welding or flagging in a cat and a 2.5" or 3" cat bax with a Magnaflow muffler welded in.

Apart from the MR O2 this is what I'm running, 3" Down Pipe, Magnaflow cat, 3" back and magnaflow muffler, sounds awesome, is decently quiet. quieter than all the ricer can mufflers around for sure.

Passed Oregon state inspection with out problems.

im running a stock o2, meagan racing downpipe, and a greddy evo exhaust. Has a really nice deep tone almost subi like. And you still here your turbo spooling, BOV actuating over the exhaust. One of the best ive heard on a dsm.

Thanks for the comments.

JNZ has done a lot of work on my car and I'm taking it to them for their opinion on this. They recommend a "Thermal 3 Catback Exhaust-2G AWD".

Any opinions on that? I googled it & even saw some youtube videos on it. Seems pretty loud to me but hard to tell. Maybe I can get used to it. I dunno.

thanks for fast respond
but it says for fwd
mine is awd

I wonder if you are having the same problem finding a 3 inch AWD downpipe as JNZ did for me.

Everything has really turned crazy for me - too much to try to explain it all, but briefly, it turned out that a catback system would not solve my problem, the leak is up near downpipe/flexo/cat that need replacing. The rest of the exhaust is at least still in one piece.

I could not afford both a catback upgrade AND a new downpipe/cat, so was going to have the immediate problem fixed first - replacing the downpipe + cat (my current cat is unsalvageable supposedly), then hopefully in the future replace everything back from that, do it as 3 inch all the way and get a performance upgrade at the same time out of it (still hoping for something not LOUD though).

Was all set to new downpipe done Tuesday. But JNZ could not get the parts that they ordered!!!!!! They say they cannot get a 3 inch downpipe anywheres, at least not the manufacturer type they recommended (??). My back is to the wall with state inspection up next week, so now I am just getting 2 inch downpipe type fix since they can supposedly get those parts.

I wonder if there is some kind of AWD 3 inch downpipe shortage now (sigh).

Megan has had a lot of problems keeping the 2G AWD downpipe in stock. My buddy ordered a full 3" Megan exhaust and it took probably 3 months just to get the downpipe. The catback was here in a week.

They are really nice though, My whole exhaust is custom 3" without cat's or resonator and an HKS Hi-Power muffler, I think it sounds good and it isn't too loud IMO. Here's a quick video I took a year or so ago, Before I put my Megan O2 housing on.

i ran a tsudo 3 dp with an ebay 3 cat backN1 replica and its work for aver 2 years no problem. and my cat back came with a silencer in case its to loud for you. its about 240 for that plus if you want a highflow cat installed. if not you can just run the cat back for like 140-150 of ebay.
