well its about time to put on a good exhaust as im on a bigt28 now with hard ic pipes and a type s bov and i can really feel the stock exhaust holding me back.. i dont hit 15psi until 4k, and thats on a tiny t28 :( ..i have a problem though, i am back living at my parents house for a while and with the hours i work, all of my free time is between 10pm and 6 am.. basicly when the entire neighborhood is sleeping. i am not an asshole and i pretty much just idle down the street until im out of the residential area before opening it up, but i am worried that when i go full 3" with the rnr o2 eliminator dp, test pipe and extreme motorsports 3" catback that even at idle it may be too much. so, 3" people, how does your exhaust sound at idle compared to stock? think it will wake people sleeping on the 2nd story of a house about 30 ft from where i park when i start the car? it is really going to blow if i get it all going and my super, SUPER anal parents bi*** about it. there will be nothing worse than the incessant nagging that will surely spew forth daily if they can hear my car when i pull up at night :)

Then go with a 2.5"

If you are only going to be running that T28 then you will be fine. The difference is noticable even at idle. There are some things that you can put in the system that can help though. Resonators, cats, or extra inline mufflers are a thought.

It is pretty bassy (sp) at idle with a 3" system. Just don't want you to get the typical. "Screw everyone else, it at all that bad."

In my case with a 3" Thermal R&D you can easily hear the low rumble 100 ft away, it's even worse now with a 3" DP straight through.
There is no comparison with stock. On a 1G stock you couldn't hear the car.running 10 ft away. I don't know how loud 2G's are stock but I expect with a 3" exhaust the result on a 2G wouldn't be too different than my 1G.

They are basically the same at idle.

Stock is way quiet, but with a larger turbo back 3" it is rumbling at idle at the 100ft. mark.

crap.. unfortunately thats what i was expecting (but didnt want) to hear. guess ill just start with a catback and go from there and if it is waking people up then figure something out.. maybe rig up a cap of some sort that i could put on the tip for when i am coming home. ghetto but i need to lose the stock exhaust. as for going 2.5 i would if i thought id be running the t25 forever, but once i get a 12 out of it i am probably going to sell it and get something bigger. i am basicly building my system to support a 50 trim sized turbo of some sort but running the t28 until the rest of the car is ready for something like that. thanks for the help guys :)

When I bought my car it had a tanabe super medallion 3" cat back.. I recently installed to a hi-flow 3" cat and a 3" downpipe to complete the system and eliminated the bottleneck restrictions. It is not any louder than when it was just the cat-back... but it certainly performs better with true 3" all the way back. In my opinion a cat-back is just as loud as a full 3" Turbo-back w/ a hi-flow cat. Yes it is a low rumble at idle, but there are some systems that are supposed to be relatively quiet. The Tanabe is not one of them... everyone knows when I arrive home because they can hear my car from inside the house.

You may want to consider a tuneable muffler such as a supertrapp? then if its too loud you can change it easily without having to remove your whole system.

Try getting a resonator put in if you think it's too loud. Magnaflow mufflers are also said to quiet them down a little.

my cousin and i both have 3inch turbo backs with magnaflows with no cats, i have a canister and he has a normal style muffler, they are way deep and bassy, which is really what you hear in the house is the bass of it, i wouldn't really say they are quieter, they do drone less in 5gear then my thermal r&d, but you can me or him coming down the street.
