Has anyone ever done a 3" exhaust from the turbo back and used the stock muffler? What do you guys think about taking the stock muffler and cutting it open and running a straight pipe into it and stopping it right before the dual exits, then re-welding it shut? Maybe some variance of that. Any ideas? I love the way the stock exhaust tips look on my car and I would like to stay "sleeping". Thanks for the help. :dsm: :thumb:

There are plenty of low profile dual tip mufflers that would look, sound and flow better.
Agreed :thumb: . That would be a lot of work to do when you could just buy stock looking tips.

My mechanic is running a 3" through a hollowed out stock muffler on his galant. Looks stock and sounds great. It may not be as highflow as a aftermarket muffler but it works great. He has a stroker pushing almost 600whp so I dont think you will have a problem.

Thanks Jay for the info. I know that there is other exhausts out there that will fit the bill but that is not what I am looking for. Is there any other ideas? Did he run the 3" all the way in or just to the end, Jay? Thanks for the help.

You may want to check out this muffler http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=14221 . It is stainless with 3" inlet and dual 2.5 " outlets. I have this muffler, but yet to have it welded on my 3" turbo back. Also, if you take the tips off your stock muffler (they are held on with two small bolts) they will slide over the tips on the magnaflow, then you could just tack weld them in place. This is what I plan to do, trying to look as stock as possible. I have seen others on this site using this muffler as well.

Sorry guys but those mufflers are pretty ugly and they will sound really crappy by the end of the game.

Those mufflers are designed for like trucks and stuff.
The ugly one in the picture and link above, is for trucks or big cars that its mounted up under the truck so you can run dual exhaust out both sides or something it looks really wierd to see it hanging in the back i think you'll be dissapointed.

You'd be more satisfied with a polished SS muffler from magnaflow, rather than models like the above.

Check out some of these, if you shop around you will find some of these models with a 3" inlet so you won't have to hack them apart.

Check this one out:

Also check out my thread, has lots of great information in it, especially pertaining to the mufflers suggested in the posts above mine in this thread.

Magnaflow makes the best mufflers in my opinion. As you can see from his link they are straight through muffs. The only thing I dont like about these ones are they are the street series. My brother has one and when his car boosts you can hear the air pushing through the muffler making it sound closer to a jet engine then a car. I have the same muffler but the race series. The pipe throught the muffler was so large I could fit my arm through it. Its pretty much a 3" whole through the muff. It also sounds much better than the street series.

Are you talking about mine? It's the same muffler you linked 2x above without the bling tips and extra 60+ bucks. You can hear the turbo though it and it flows like a river

I am actually.
I'm glad it flows well and you can hear your turbo through it, but the fact remains it was designed for large vehicles like a truck and to have piping come off of those dual outlets and split to either side of the vehicle for dual exhausts.

But the more you mention it, I think the kteller magnaflow with the dual tips and 3" inlet might be identical to yours with the "bling bling" tips just put on.
Of course this is not desireable and would make it still nothing more thana truck muffler.
Good catch.

The perfect muffler would be one of the dual tipped street series with a 3" inlet, however, they only seem to produce the nice SS street series with a 2.25 inlet.
We'll have to do some more searching to find the ideal candidate.

LOL it's not a truck muffler it's the street/race series. Same as kteller. It's smaller then what the stock one is. They don't carry it on there site anymore you can get it with the dual tips or a single 4 or 5" tip was in the import section I believe. Makes an N1 sound like a tin can

It REALLY doesnt look like the street series, especially with that lack of polish.
Could you provide a model number? that would clear this up nicely:thumb:

In the thread I posted several people also claimed that that muffler wasn't very good i.e. truck application/horrible sound and rust over time. Thats why I'm saying these things. But if you can provide a model number we can put that to bed.

Magnaflow Muffler Race 14828 14"x5"x8 the body is SS the tips are not.

you can find them on ebay i haven't seen the dual tips anymore like I have. I think that's the part number

If you do a search for Magnaflow those are the numbers that come up. I believe they discontinued them since they do not have the model number anymore. I believe around 2 years ago just do a serch on Magnaflow and you will get about 2 pages worth.

edit model number # 14830 was the 2.5" cat-back same muffler above just 2.5" inlet and a full cat-back. That got discontinued also since it's not on there web site anymore either.

Get the race series. Not the street. I have the 3"inlet race and sounds great. Deep low tone at idle and opens up great at high rpm's. My bro has the street and its real quiet. Sounds like air pushing through a small hole. After I think about it he has a 2.5" exhuast and his has the 2.25" inlet. Its the first mod and worst mod he ever did. He still layed 300whp/300lb at 17psi through this small exhaust.

I have a magnaflow high cat in my 3" exhaust. Im guessing you have a test pipe. Mine pops very little at idle but sounds so good. Never pop when im engine braking

Tubular 02, Downpipe. piping, muffler no cat or test pipe or emmisions check here where I live. Almost like an SRT-4 but louder and deeper

Thats what you want for a turbod car, those dual tip ones look restrictive ^^

My muffler now is some cheap non namebrand muffler that i bought off a friend for 40 bucks at the time I was still stock and I wanted something new on my car so I just took the muffler, but I hate it ( its a str8t through design ) but it was more so for an n/t, probably a honda... It sounds great at idle but at high rpms and when the engines reving down its sounds like its choking or something like the airs hissing to come out of the muffler itself, and my engine pops and gurgles a lot I think it has to do with a/f ratios though.

I plan on changing it very soon.... I was looking into those apexi 3in
any recommendation on what muffler I should get; I want a round straight through exhaust with a blue burnt tip ( matches my car thats why LOL) that isnt huge and ricey but has a 3 inch inlet and outlet hole... Any links on some of that fit the description?

This one might work but it needs tips.

Problem is its not the quality of the street series, and most likely doesnt use the same construction.

Does anyone know of other brand than magnaflow? Surely there is a nice dual tip, 3" inlet muffler out there.

The muffler you linked is the same as the one I linked other than the length. I linked the vender I bought mine at for $110 bucks and it is the 14" body version. It is a stainless magnaflow muffler. When you look through it, it is straight through, except for the split. It retains the 3" diameter right through then splits to two 2.5". The quality is exactly the same as the other round stainless magnaflow mufflers, which I also have, same type of construction

Thanks for all the comments guys. I think that I will give the stock one a try with the modification of the 3". Thanks alot!

why we just gave you the link of 3" muffler with stock looking dual tips? Your stock muffler will be a restriction even if you make it a 3" opening
