I know I have an exhaust leak, but I'm not sure where it is coming from. The exhaust manifold -IS- bolted on to the head and turbo good. I know I have an exhaust leak, by listening, but also by the black soot on top upper back part of my turbo, where the J-Pipe connects, and on the lines behind that area. Here's a picture. The car feels strong still, but I know it's building boost slower then it should. Heres a picture of the black soot im talking about...

Again, I know the exhaust manifold is in good both ways, so I need other suggestions. Thanks

Just feel for it with your hand. Obviously, do this when the engine is cold so you don't burn yourself. You will be able to feel it blowing on your hand.

Use some seafoam right before your next oil change. It will give you the benefits of:

1. Cleaning carbon buildup in your motor.
2. Showing you your exhaust leaks.
3. Smoke screening your driveway (any illicit activities can and should be done now).
4. Pissing off your neighbors.

If it is still the stock exhaust manifold it could have cracked, they are prone to it, On my
2g the mani was cracked and the soot was everywhere. It cracked on the bottom, it may be hard to feel depending on the size and location of the crack, if its a crack.

My stock manifold on my 1g is cracked straight up the middle of the turbo bolts, its about 4-5 inches long, but I don't think that it ammounts to much really. Definately do the seafoam, I found all my exhaust leaks that way, just make sure you have a buddy or someone out to help you...

+1 on the seafoam. I seafoamed a few of my friends evo's and we found quite a few exhaust leaks on the o2 housing to downpipe and you can clearly see where it was coming from. Would it be possible for you to take off the manifold?
