exhaust law

I am not arguing the fact. Just pointing out the fact that it doesn't state in your post that all modification is illegal. Of course its depending on the day, mood of cop, alignment of the planets you always take a chance in getting a ticket. Anything that pushes the boundaries(even if you are legal) cops will bug you. It is up to everyone else if they want to deal with it. Myself. I have only one warning in Oregon and I am all over Washington daily. I have never had an issue. The other thing is that I drove a STI before this and it has a low rumble until open throttle. So it was always quite when I wanted it to be.

Hey Rob, I posted the law since the OP didn't type in Washington, RCW and exhaust into Google. Most people on tuners have a penchant for being spoonfed.

I live in redmond wa, i've had a turbo back 3 " megan racing exhaust for over a year. I never had any problems with cops and my exhaust. till now. i ve got two tickets for deffective or modified exhaust with in 3 months. its pretty messed up, b/c the last one that i got the cop pulled me over and then a loud as* fat diesel truck flew right by the cop. and i asked him if he heard that truck and he completely ignore me :notgood:

ya, the tread seems to have already answered its self with everybodys input. so whats left. just complain about the fact. my best advice is if you get pulled over, have youre drivers liscense and proof of insurence/registration in hand ready for the officer before they come to the window(they dont like to wait), and just play it buddy buddy, and that is odviously the best way to go about it. The last thing you want to do is get on theyre bad side(panic/start complaining). Cause you already know you are in deep shit, y make it deeper. even if they sound like a jerk(which most of them try to). im not saying this will "work" just reduce the risk of you getting ticketed. thats all a person can do besides throw them a donut and run. :hellyeah::tease:

i think the police are stereotypical due to the fact that how many muscle class cars do you see running around with v6 blocks with loud exhaust and shit and how many do you see getting an exhaust ticket... i dont live in washington but im right next to spokane in post falls and i see alot of tuners in specific getting pulled over for alot of dumb shit most cominly the exhaust.... but when i go driving around with my budy in his cummins deisil that has two large stacks coming out of the bed and being ten times louder then most tuners around here and him not getting pulled over once... sometimes makes me think:hmm:

edit- whats even more funny is we get automaticly put into a tuner clss in a cops eyes but really its a domestic

This thread is part of the reason I bought a sedan. My CTS-V is faster and louder than my Talon or Fiero, yet it's under the radar and the cops don't even look my way unlike with the other two cars. Plus having your car registered in a different state than you live helps with other stupid stuff like front plate laws.

+1, mine is registered in WI, they have emissions out there, but as of July 08', all 95 and below cars (OBD1) don't have to do emissions anymore :hellyeah: just renew registration annually. Personally I think if you can't suck it up when you get a ticket for modified exhaust, then don't modify it.

I run a full 3" with a High flow cat and Vibrant muffler, it's moderately loud but not too bad or I've just gotten used to it. Never been pulled over for loud exhaust only speeding. May also help that it's a stock appearing (oval) style and less noticable than a big ####ing, shiny, coffee can sticking out.

I think a lot of it also depends on driving style. I have 2.5" turbo back with just a muffler and I've never had any problems with the police. I just usually keep the revs low and obey speed laws. I've driven this car all around WA for the last 5 years and I've never been pulled over while driving it.

I don't think it the noise that they hate i think they just streotype us based on the style of car. my friend is into hondas and has the same problems. but my other buddy who is a biker rides his straight piped harley almost everyday has never got pulled over and I have never got pulled over in my chevelle and its waaay louder then my eclipse i think they just see the sporty import car and thing young punk kid. I can smash all around town in my chevelle and have no problems but take my eclipse out and shift above 4,000 rpm and they think im street racing:notgood:

Glad I live in SO OR where you can run open header LOL not that I do but In GRANTS PASS they dont give a shit about exhaust at all but better have your front plate. Funny how much it varys by city. I got a fix it ticket in my old honda for no front plate (in the trunk) and blue corner lights but not my header back cat-less 2.5" exhaust system. trust me it was loud but clean. I wish that the states would come up with a system for the measurement of exhaust an use it universally but that would be in a perfect world wouldnt it. Like thats gonna happen.

I got pulled over a couple weeks ago and the stater stated that any modification over oem replacement is illegal and I can be pulled over and ticketed for it.

From the Washington State Law

"No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle not equipped as required by this subsection, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this subsection. A court may dismiss an infraction notice for a violation of this subsection if there is reasonable grounds to believe that the vehicle was not operated in violation of this subsection."

KTHXBAI

I know this is old, but I've beat 2 'modified exhaust' tickets(not 'too loud of exhaust' tickets). 1 was in my Jeep(FM 40 series, no cat, 8" turndown after muffler) and 1 was in my Talon(3" turbo back, no cat or muffler). When going to court, I asked if the ticketing officer or the court itself can prove that I, as the current vehicle owner modified it. Since they cannot, both were dropped. Both instances I claimed the vehicle was purchased that way, which they weren't, but not proveable by the court.
