Whats the difference? and also how shy is it compared to the 20g's because my mechanic installing my 6bolt with 2gpistons says he has a never been used evoIII 16g some guy flaked on him and he wants to sell it to me for 650$, says he has others looking to buy it too...
he also said its good for 350hp and that slowboy laid down 400 out of one

what do you guys suggest?

sry for double post

BTW that turbo comes installed with new seals a 34mm flapper wastegate and ported o2 housing for 650$

You're letting a guy who hasn't yet installed an EVO 3 16g in a DSM, install your 6-bolt? Yikes! Get that warranty in writing, bro. Those are one of the most common DSM turbo upgrades.

Here are some prices from some randomly chosen bookmarks:

$529.95 from DSMparts.com

$568.97 from SlowboyRacing.com

$569.00 from MachV.com

I'm sure some vendor I didn't mention will chime in with their price and blacklist me for not mentioning them. The point is, don't be afraid to shop around. It doesn't sound like he's gonna let that thing go for nothing. However, you didn't mention if it's an off-the-shelf EVO 3 16g or if it's had any special work done to it. Have the housings been ported? Is it a standard wastegate? I'd find out before make any decisions. :laser:

Is it a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Evo III 16G or a Made in China Evo III 16G GT turbo? Slowboy has a good writeup on the differences.

thanks for the input!!!

i have not seen it yet, i would assume its an off the shelf part, i will ask him if it has been ported or clipped. i will check on the MHI or chinese housings.

YES this guy has a shop full of supras and DSMs and lexus SC's and such deals with stuffing monster turbos in integras and miatas and all of the aboved named plus more, its a motor swap shop www.autolabonline.com

Well, it all depends on your goals. The EVO III will be able to handle up to and over 400hp with proper tuning and machining, but that will be pushing it. The 20G is a bigger turbo with larger compressor and turbin wheels and can handle well over 400hp. Slowboy Racing sells the EVO III for about $570 not including the install kit which is around $175 and up. Also, if you had your O2 housing ported that would be $50+. So, for $650 installed (assuming that includes the install kit) with the ported housing, is a good deal. Just consider your goals and go from there. Good luck.

The EVO III Big 16g MHI not the chinese version is an amazing little turbo. I love mine and I still dont think that I have found the limit of it yet. If that price includes installation and the install kit then I agree it is a good deal.

Good Luck

THANKS AGAIN!!!!

my goal with this turbo is about 400awhp, if i ever decide to go more i will look into the 20g, but for now i think this will do, i feel like it is a deal the guy has done lots of work for me so far i havent even driven the car but one time, that was with my t-25 on it i blew an i/c pipe off and since then its had a 14b and now im thinknig about this 16

400awhp has been done before on this turbo but dyno numbers can be manipulated. I am pushing this turbo pretty hard. It has a few more lb/min of airflow left but I am flowing 40 lb./min. now which should be around 400 crank hp. 400awhp is going to be a tough goal and will definitely be at the limit.

If you truly want 400 awhp then I would have to suggest a bigger turbo. I personally dont really look at the hp level for any reason other than measuring gains from certain mods. 1/4 mile times and mph are a better measurement of performance to me.

what is the spool time like on that?

remember i have 2gpistons in my 6bolt motor. (so it should spool a little faster than 1g pistons)

If you want to get anywhere near 400whp I would avoid the 34mm flapper. Some people claim they have no problems with it blowing open at high psi, others do, including myself. You won't get above 300whp with it IMO. Unless you later swap to an external WG.

so your saying if i want to boost past 17psi im gonna need the external wastegate?

how much boost will this little turbo handle with an external setup and whats the spool time on it?

Just because one person had trouble with the 34mm wastegate doesn't mean everyone does. I had it and ran 24 psi daily driven with no problems at all, and to be honest your almost the only person I've ever heard who's had trouble with it blowing open and limiting boost. I have however read a bunch of posts from people who were either very happy with the turbo, or who had boost creep dispite the 34mm wastegate. Its a great turbo with one flaw-Its hard to run under 17-18 psi, but if your going to run more than that its flawless. I can flow up to 44lbs of air, and it gets full boost by 3000-3100 with excellent transient response. So to sum it up you'll get full boost around 800 rpms faster then with the 20g, and can make almost the same power. I think you'll be happy with the turbo and that its a good deal.

hey LRS do you know who drives a maroon gst with a frontmount and stock wheels and he lives in prospect his pops owns a red slantnose turbo porsche.

do you have any problems with the 34mm flap or what do u mean it wont make 400 hp, how did slowboy do it?

I forgot about the flapper issue. I originally purchased a 34 mm flapper to avoid boost creep. And guess what, it would not hold anymore than 24psi falling to 18 or so by redline. Since then I have upgrade to a 38mm tial wg set up off the O2 housing. Now I have ran up to 28.5psi holding to 24-25psi by redline.

The flapper will cause issues with high boost no matter what it will blow open on you above 24psi. To maximize any turbo setup running high boost you will need an external wg. Or at least stay with the stock flapper.

As far as 400 whp on a dyno, like I said those numbers can be manipulated. No two dyno's will read the same. For example everyone that was dynoing at the shootout can tell you the dyno was reading low compared to most. However Buschur stated it was a more "real world" reading.

400 whp is a very powerful car that most will never see. If I were you I would get the EVO III 16g and get used to the kind of power it will make, since you really only have experience with a T-25 thier is going to be a big difference. Then if you want more, upgrade the turbo then.

IMO the EVO turbo is the best street turbo you could buy. It spools really fast and pulls all the way to redline with the right setup. :thumb:

I am only about 1.5 hours north on Louisville. Come up here and I will take you for a ride. :D

hah youd get to see mah leet secondary ride, mah 92' z24 3.1L cavalier (im thinkin about adding mah t-25 onto it hehe)

its got a few things done alrdy tho ;)

No. I'm saying the the stock wastegate could take you there, but yes an external is best, but may be a bit of overkill on a 16G setup. Since you can't undo the flapper mod, welding it shut and going external is about the only choice. Since you haven't bought it yet, I'd suggest trying it with the stock internal first.

Where did I say everyone has problems with it? I believe what I said was:
"Some people claim they have no problems with it blowing open at high psi, others do, including myself."

K thanx.

just talked to my mechanic and since he removed the head to do some valve work hes also not only porting the o2 housing he said hes "opening up" the manifold too

LOL
the 34mm flap mod is alrdy on the turbo i cannot change it now. he also said the "wastegate is set to 14lbs", so does that mean he set my boost controller at 14lbs?

He is most likely talking about the stock wg pressure unless you have a EBC that he could just type in the boost setting on. Otherwise he would have no way of telling where the boost was set at with a MBC.

well i kno he has been driving my car with the 14b on it, maybe he dialed it into 14lbs?? LOL

i think thats what he means tho... the MBC regulates the wastegate release pressure right?

Agree'd. If you want something that is amazingly fun to drive around on the street and will haul some a$$ at the track also, this turbo is perfect.

thanks

im also running a stock 2g sidemount, i bet i will heatsoak that pretty quickly eh? would a i/c sprayer help?
