I have The EVOIII 16g and all the supporting mods (check profile for list). running 19-20 psi with water injection. I plan to max out the turbo with a bit more tuning on the DSM link. My question is would it be worth it to spend the $600 for cams for this turbo. would the benifit outweigh the $$ on my setup. I would probably go the HKS 264-272 setup due to my turbo size. I rarely hit the strip(the closest one is 225 miles away), mostly just the street and messing around.

In a word - yes. My friend's B16G car with 264s made 313whp on pump gas @19psi and was at like 340ish on C16 when his oil filter backed off and he let off, would've easily made 375. Just get a pair of FP1s for $450 a set.

Definately worth it. If you upgrade turbo's, it's not like it won't still be beneficial and you would have to upgrade to something different.

Yes it really worth and in my opinion you should look at the FP1 or FP2 cams. I made 311whp@20psi with stock cams on my evo turbo. Also with dsmlink you could tell that at high rpm's the stock cams were running out breath which would explain the decrease in airflow. After i got the Fp2 cams we noticed a immediate difference in power at the topend. Well worth it in my opinion

Hey man I can offer you some first hand experience with the 264/272 combo.

I had a totally stock head about a month ago, that bent valves. Had the head completely rebuilt, and bought a nice set of HKS 264/272s. I run an 18G turbo, which flows about the same as your EVO 16G. Sunday the car will be running. I know what it felt like before, so I can tell you how much of a difference the cams make.

Also, here's a link to dyno results from various cam makers:

Bascially:

Setup:

-1994 Eagle Talon - 5spd -1991 Motor with roughly 40K miles, stock bottom and top end including head gasket -Turbo: 16G with ported exhaust housing -Exhaust Manifold: 2G ported -Intake Manifold: Stock -Throttle Body: Stock -MAF: 1G slightly hacked (screw backed out) with K&N filter & stock turbo intake pipe -Intercooler: Spearco 2-221 core with custom mandrel bent 2.25" diameter piping. -Exhaust: HRC O2 eliminator downpipe and 3" exhaust with no cat-conv. -Injectors & Fuel Control: Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump, 510cc/min injectors & S-AFC -Boost controller: Ric Gillis Manual boost controller, check ball & spring type. -Gas: 100 octane unleaded -Ignition: Stock with NGK BPR7ES plugs, timing set to stock specifications

Stock Mitsubishi Camshafts:

Peak HP: 309.5 Peak TRQ: 295.3 Spool up on street: quick, full boost by 3.2K RPM in 3rd gear with good power when off boost and as it's coming onto boost.

HKS 264 Intake 272 Exhaust

Peak HP: 324.2 Peak TRQ: 333.1 Spool up on street: Slightly slower than stock (3.3K RPM in 3rd gear) and a very slight loss in power in off boost conditions.

I just got that right from the link - but after seeing this, I got my HKS cams ;)

I'll update in a day or two let you know what I think about the cams. They sound allout choppier at idle though, sounds badass...

Yes and i recomend comp cams

On my SMALL 16g i have a set of comp cams 100's

Before and after awd dyno results

Pump gas (before)
289awhp ~20psi

Pump gas After cams
303awhp ~20psi

Race gas (110)
302.6awhp (24-25psi)

After with race gas
338awhp ~25psi

yes get some cams. when you start to run more boost and your turbo drops off you will have something to fall back on. those cams will help u get that extra power you need to keep your car give you a solid pull.

you should looking for hks 272's witch i strongly recommend, but there really hard to find right now. only shop i know that has them is ams. give eric a call im sure he will help you out. 1-847-709-0530. jim :thumb:

Cams are always worth it. Even if you had a 14B turbo and were gonna stick with it for road course or something like that for fast spool the cams would be a good investment.

NA, Turbo, Nitrous, 4cyl, 6cyl, 8cyl whatever, cams are a huge improvement no matter what your running as long as they are setup per your application like HKS or Comp are on our cars.

Import Evolution has them aswell and I can vouch for him hes a great guy!

Think cams would help decrease boost creep at all, since the engine will be taking in more air? Just food for thought...

not really since you are also spitting out more exhaust gas. From my experience.

I have the 34mm flapper and an extremely ported o2 housing so boost creep is not an issue for my setup. Thanks for all the replies, i think i am going to go with the FP2 cams, ive been doing research on them and they seem like a good deal for $450.
