Are Cams worth it?

kewl... still gunna get them... just going to re-order my prioriteis...:thumb:

A camshaft is the heart of an internal combustion engine. Cams open the valves for a specified range (read in degrees) and allow the gases to flow into and out of the cylinder by actuating the valves. The healthier the cam, the more the valves open. This is the most efficient way to make power in a N/A, and is among the best ways to improve response, efficiency and top-end on a Turbo-motor. Is it the biggest gain? Well not on the dyno, but an aftermarket cam changes the feel of the motor, and in my experience on Toyotas is a huge seat of the pants change.

hummm... that was the impression I was under.... but I am thinking that any mods I do first will be amplified when I swap the cams... so why not build UP TO the cams... instead of putting the cams in... and building arround them...

4g63 cams are hydraulic roller. They wont wear down. regardless if they are stock, or aftermarket.

I'd rather run a better turbo and ported exhaust mani with 3" back exhaust than a pair of aftermarket cams. This is my OPINION, and if you want to run cams first, let me know how well it turns out. Remember, if you want more top-end, cams are the secret. Oh, BTW, modern fuel injection will often smooth out the idle of a lumpy race cam, albeit at closer to 1800 rpm than 900.

I agree with what you guys are saying, without atleast doing all the basics first you might not tell a big difference... Once you get up in higher HP numbers...Upgraded cams will really bring out the hp in the mid to high rpm range, while kinda having a shaky idle but enough to deal with, the shaky idle can be delt with i am supposing as well jsut depending on what cams you are gonna buy. just my .02
