Evo 8 ECU In 2g Works!!

Thanks for confirming you got the same two codes and thank for the help. I was worried when I saw the crank and cam sensor show up with the Evo ecu. I tagged both yours and the mork's post as helpful; hopefully bump that reputation up.

Getting closer. I loaded 9653 and it starts up and I can rev it but after 3 seconds the car just dies. A slow die like I am stalling. And it idles really freaking low ~400rpms. It idles great 800rpms with ceddy mods.

I am drinking a beer and calling it a night. If you guys have any advice let me know. Greatly appriciated!!!

Has anyone had any luck disabling the CAS codes with a USDM rom? Been having issues with the rev limiter on 9653 and trying to switch back to 9417. I copied the periphery data from the EDM rom but no success in stoping those codes.

sounds like something isn't set correctly??? you install a Tephra mod 9653? maybe the auto valet is on and the valet idle is set too low? or maybe the fuel pump is priming but not staying on when the car starts????

your not going to get to much luck with the 9415 ROM, no one here that i know uses it... we use mostly the 9653 ROM, but there might still be a hand full of people using the 9055 ROM. what version 9653 are you using?

It runs like it has a vacuum leak. That is the best way to describe it. If I hold my foot down it will stay but the second my foot comes off the gas pedal it just chokes out.

The valet rev limiter is off and is set at 1500. I can rev over that.

I can switch right over to my ceddy mod ecu and this thing purrs like a kitten.

Can you send me your rom and I could like at it and see if i can find any differences?

Tephra v7 9653. Have you had any issue with the stationary rev limit?

your ROM might be stuck on an alt map or at the least alt fuel injector scaling...

to be honest i don't know if i ever had a chance to flash v7 to my car before it got totaled, but i never had a problem with 5.1... maybe both of you should try backing up just a tad to see if that solves your issues... try flashing 5.1 and see how that works for you... another thing is there have been a couple of cases where a flash didn't completely wright over what was already in the ECU and people have had to wright a completely different ROM to their ecu then wright the one they wanted to use back to it. i had to do this once....

Thanks in advance!!!

yeah I am running 550cc so I put in 504 for injector size since the stock EVO injectors are 560cc and entered in a 513. MAF i entered 286g/s since that is what the 98 ecu uses. As for the MAF scaling I took the 98 numbers and added the MAF Adder (80.2) to it to get my MAF scaling numbers.

As far as I know I do not have Alt maps enabled. I did enable launch maps but I switched them off and it didnt make any difference.

did you change your injector latencies???

I thought it could have been a messed up rom/flash so I reflashed the stock rom back into it, reset everything and tried again with no luck. The CEL is annoying but I can deal with it.

Here's what I ended up with for MAF values while using a 2g MAF on my car. It should put you in the ballpark at least.

First look tells me something is seriously wrong with your rom. Basically I doubt that it is a tephramod rom but you're using it with a tehpra xml which means you're going to mess something up along the way.

Start with either a basic rom and definition set or redownload a tephra rom to use with these definitions. I would offer to set one up for you but I'm pretty busy tonight.

List your mods anyway and if I have the time I'll look at it.

hmm I downloaded that right off evom... but anything is possible.

Mods.
Stock 7 bolt top and bottom end.
550cc
FP big t-28
Ported 2g manifold
3" Turboback Megan exhaust
Punishment FMIC kit
ebay injen intake
Stock 2g maf
FueLab AFPR
HKS Bov.
Still have the stock pump in there. It will be replaced with a walboro 255 in the next week.
Stage 3 Exedy clutch. I dont know what stage 3 exedy means but it came installed with the car.

I know half that stuff doesnt matter but thats what shes got. I greatly appreciate all the help.

Fuel pressure is stock? I might have time to take a look at it tonight. If I do I will probably also make a "stock" rom for people looking to make the switch though there are fewer and fewer of those lately.

Not sure what to do with this. I've looked at your rom and I can't find anything that really sets it off as being unhappy. You do have significantly different MAF compensation from Knockgoon's and I don't have a ton of experience tuning the MAF because I switched to SD early so I can't tell you how much of a difference it will make for sure. If I understand the theory behind those tables though it will likely make a huge difference. Try setting them to that.

I also obviously have an issue with my definitions for non-SD 96530706 roms as certain tables are really messed up even on a stock 96530706 rom that I downloaded so I'm not sure how much help I'm going to be in that department.

My MAF scaling made it so load=kPa pretty closely. Some of the difference may be from injector compensation. I have PTE 680's and I used whatever values from EvoM that I could find for them.

I know I swapped my 450's back in and tuned the MAF with that so I could compare, but I'm not sure where that ROM is at.

Hey guys...just wanted to say whats up...

I bought an evo ecu back when this thread was on page 2...screwed around with it for hours and hours and gave up about 6 months ago. Never could get it working. Well turns out my Openport 1.3 was dead the whole time and the ecu I bought was fried too. Doh!

Anyway I FINALLY got my car running on an Evo rom, tephramod v7 to be specific. I ended up buying an ecu from a 2003 Eclipse RS m/t for $75 :D

Ill be using it to tune my 2g with a 4g64 swap 9.5:1 comp with a (for now) 14b...Once I get it dialed in Id like to switch to a 20g later this year. So yeah pretty much I just wanted to say hi because I will probably be posting questions in this thread once I get into the thick of it.

BTW...you guys were talking about the fan control tables...do the fans not work for everyone when you leave the tables unmodified? Cause Im pretty sure I have the wiring correct but my fans never turn on. Might have to just hook it up to a switch before I blow my headgasket..

The fans would turn on, but the a/c fan was getting a PWM signal instead of an constant on/off one. If your fans never come on, something is messed up.

I'd like to see how well your tuning goes. If I had the funds, I love to build a 2.4 block with the rest of the goods to make a really torquey mofo. I would probably stop around 9:1CR though because I can't always get 93 as much as I drive, and I'd hate to turn the boost down.

Ok maybe my perspective on the wiring gets screwed up when Im laying upside down under the dash haha. Ill check it out...

I took the car in to get dyno'ed for a baseline...running on the stock 1995 ecu with no tune at all at ~9psi the car made 180whp and 200ft/lbs. It was like 90* out with 90% humidity LOL. SAE corrected it was 205whp and 225ft/lb.

My o2 was maxed out at 10:1, and the dyno said about 9.8:1 LOL.

Once I switched to the Evo ecu it ran alot better but I was getting alot of knock on tip-in at 3000-3500rpm. To make sure its not real (car never did that before) I spent about 4-5 days messing with the timing and afr...I pulled alot of timing in the mid range and about 1-2 degrees in various places up top. None of this helped me so Ive tried raising the knock tables by 10 load at 3000-3500rpm and it went away.

Right now Ive got the boost set at 11psi. AFR drops to 12 at ~5psi, 11.5 once it hits 10psi and then drops to 11.2 by redline. Even pulling as much as 4 degrees of timing in the mid range I feel like Ive picked up 20-30whp already...

So anyway now I can start smoothing out my timing curve a bit and upping the boost. I plan to run about 15-16psi on this 14b and then try out a 20g at around the same boost level.

It runs pretty damn good for only a week of tuning...my only real problems right now are that when I stomp on it and boost comes on fast the AFR seems to dip to ~10.7-10.8 for a second. What should I do about that? Accel enrichment adjustments maybe? And also on REALLY light throttle going up a slight grade, I get a bit of surging that almost feels like a misfire. Not sure though...need some logs of that.

You'll need to mess with the knock multiplier tables, all 2gs seem to pick up crazy amounts of knock with an evo8 ecu. Something about the harmonics of our engine or the signal from the knock sensor trips it. If you want to understand the theory and also be able to watch your knock sensor noise through evoscan there is a large knock control thread on evolutionm.net largely written by jcsbanks and mrfred that discuss how the knock sensor does its job and how to read phantom knock from a log.

If you don't care about the theory or understanding those bits you can just take it from experience that the low multiplier can be left alone or incremented once or twice, the mid needs to be incremented to approximately where the high is at stock (20-24 IIRC) and the high sometimes can be left alone and sometimes needs to be incremented by 2-4 units.

To test this you can free rev in your driveway and just keep incrementing the pertinent mutliplier until you don't get knock free-revving, or just fill up with a tank of 110 and increment until the knock is gone from all driving conditions.
