Evo 3 not making enough power?

I have a Evo 3 16g running 20psi with walbro 190 pump (not rewired yet), 560cc evo injectors, stock SMIC, stock exhaust.

It seems like it wants to pull more but something is restricting it big time. It holds boost all the way to redline but the car seems like it stops making power after 4500 rpm's. The car itself runs great and theres no real drivability issues.

Any ideas? I realize it could very well be the SMIC or stock Exhaust. I'm definitely not feeling the kickback-in the seat type feeling at 20psi though.

Have you performed a boost leak test?

there is a boost leak at the TB shaft seals, otherwise no. I have it tuned at 11.0 AFR at WOT.

A boost leak test won't hurt. I would recommend getting new shaft seals soon. You may also have other boost leaks. Also, if you can post up a log, that will help us see what's happening after 4500 rpms.

There's a good chance your knocking and the ecu is pulling timing, stock exhaust that turbo is going to get pretty hot, and the sidemount may not be cutting it.

No I don't have a logger right now. I'll lower the boost tomorrow and compare my third gear pulls.

Oh. I thought you had a logger since it was listed in your vehicle profile. You should be able to get a good pull to redline with your boost lowered.

We'll find out when you post a log if you can get your hands on a dlogger. I'm guessing that your knocking tho. Look into a FMIC.

I think it would be a good idea to rewire the pump and see if that helps. Do a boost leak and compression test and maybe check your base timing. take a look at your plugs too

20psi + stock SMIC + stock 2.25 in exhaust = your problem.

Those extreme limiting factors will cause knock, and retarded timing that will kill the seat of pants dyno. With your setup Id run as low boost as you can until you can actually support the turbo.

Stock exhaust and smic WTF Your car is only as good as your weakest link.
Get a Fmic and Full 3" exhaust. Tune for 23-24psi and report back

An exhaust and FMIC will definitely waken up that setup, it will feel like a new car at the same boost levels. Your stock SMIC is most likely heatsoaking at 20+ lbs of boost.

^^ Agree. That's one of the new DSM owner FAQs in the articles that are a MUST READ before you do anything - a big question is "what is the biggest turbo I can run??" When you take off your O2 housing itself, just check it out. You'll notice how small that thing is comparted to the turbine housing of your Evo III, it'll be like the air is hitting a brick wall. Also, you don't have intercooler piping in any way, do you? Take a look at how narrow the elbow is just above the side-mount in the engine bay, and think about how much cfm you're trying to send though that. But yes I agree, turn the boost down. You shouldn't have it that high anyway on the stock wiring for the pump, you'll probably actually feel a bit more 'umph' when you turn it down. I kept my boost at around 15-16 on the stock pump wiring. Good luck!!
