hey i waslooking into getting a race trans to avoid problems but the only problem is i dont know which to get
i was told that tre amkes all their parts and they reliable but the shep trans seems to work great also... either way i know they r both good... but i just dont know which to go with..
i will be assembling it myself so i just need to know whos parts would be more reliable if anybody has any experience wiht either please let me know

Getting a race tranny just to "avoid problems" is not cost effective. If you want to avoid problems, just have it rebuilt with stronger parts. For the money Shep does a great job. If you actually have a purpose for a race tranny, then you would need to do your research and talk to the people with the options you have in mind (Shep or TRE).

Both options (TRE and Shep Tranny) are great options for a purpose race built tranny.

the reason i said to avoid problems is cause i just installed my 2.3 so i know my trans will be on its way soon after that.. i hvnt heard of many surviving stock transmissions with the 2.3

I just bought a dogbox trany. I got the race package. I would go with them.
Very nice. But I'm thinking that 4K isn't very cost effictive for most. I want a dogbox myself but had to go with the TRE tranny as financially I coudln't affort the dogbox. Also just a FYI if you don't have magnus install the parts they are hell with warenting the parts. I know of a guy who totally sheered every tooth off of 3rd which destroyed the tranny and Magnus didn't install the parts. They went back and forth for some time and they finally said they would replace the parts, but if you have them install the parts then they won't give you heartache. BTW this was only a low 11 second car If I remember correctly. So they are not totally indestructable. Wasn't a clutch dump he just got on it in 3rd with a FP3065 and it sheered. So he wasn't making crazy power that magnus said it can handle.

I love my TRE tranny. My next tranny for a DD will be a Shep tranny and I'll be able to say which is better. I personally think they are both equal as they use the same processes and HD parts are the same. Shot peeded gearsets and evey cryo maybe if you requrest it.

only 1400 than it is not a magnus dogbox full race enless you got it used i just got the shep haven't got to track test it yet but so far shep has great customer service and if he's got the fastest awd then i think he knows what he's doin

My dogbox only cost 1400. not 4k
NEW??? I would like to know where you purchased it at? And is it rated to handle 800+ Ft/lbs of torque? If so I'll definiltly save up for it and throw together another tranny. I would like to have a tranny I can clutch dump on a launch. Can't do that with anyone's built tranny and expect it to last.

If you would PM me the info I'd really appreicate it.

From what I've heard between Shep and TRE, I'd only choose by whichever had the easiest shipping, was closest, or other convenience consideration. You can't go wrong with either one.

i'm gonna be replacing motor and tranny in my car here soon as both took a dump on me. i'm thinkin shep, but is it possible to get the taller 5th gear set from him? or would i have to order it from tre and send it in with the tranny? didn't see anything about it on his site.

also, i'm debating going with a sbr clutch kit cause i don't like ACT's springs poppping outta the disc. does anyone know if the pivot ball on the tranny would have to be shimmed to get it to shift right as you might have to with an ACT? just don't wanna have to pull the tranny out to mess around with that. have a fidanza flywheel with new clutch fork and pivot ball, new pedal assembly, new master cylinder, etc. etc.

wondering how much my tranny will be to get fixed by shep as my bell housing is all spider cracked, the bolt hole for the tranny mount is all wallowed out, and sure some internals are gonna have to be replaced cause it vibrates like a biziitch (think the center shaft is toasted).

oh, last question, if all i'm doing is daily driving it and drag racing (no auto-x, etc.) what additional items should i look at getting for it? welded diff? kazz? gvr4 1st gear? what the heck is the 4 spider center diff? could someone bother to take the time to tell us what some of these parts do and why we'd need/choose to get them....or not? i have a 94 with 6 bolt motor if that helps. thanks!

Which ever shop you chose, make sure you get insurance for the full replacement amount when shipping the package. I sent a transfer case to Shep for a new gear set and heat-treating and both Shepracing and I went through hell with every other party involved. First of all, the 97-99 gear was on national back order so John ordered it from Japan. About a month and a half went by and the dealerdhip that it was ordered from informed John that Mitsubishi of America canceled the order for no reason that anyone could tell us of. John had then found another 97-99 Tcase and we decided to just pull it apart and send that gear set to the heat-treater. Another month and a half went by and no word on the gear set. John called the heat-treater and they told him that order had been completed to months ago. The gear that we sent was missing. About a few days later, John called me and told me that my gear set was found and was on the way back to his shop. The transfer case was finished and was back on its way to me. About another month went by and still no transfer case. I called Shep to get the Fed Ex tracking number. I went on the web and found out that my t-case had been in Chicago for the past 17 days. I called Fed Ex to find out why my package had not been delivered to me. To make a long story short, Fed Ex had lost the t-case and it was only insured for $100. John was willing to refund my $500 dollars that I had spent on the t-case and heat-treating but he would have to eat the rest of the cost. I ended up getting a different t-case and about a month after that, I find out that the t-case was sitting at a Mitsu dealership because Fed Ex had knocked off the packing slip and just decided to drop it off at a dealer because to box that it was packed in had a Mitsubishi logo on it.

My point is that I have a TRE tranny and almost had a Shep t-case so either shop does good work but get your stuff insured! I put no blame on Shepracing for the five months that I did not have a transfer case, it was just a bad series of events.
