Well, I just found out last night that my differential bearings were shot (actually, half were missing). So, I called up Shep and talked to him for a while and got some good info. After I take it off, im sending it out to Shep.

Anyone with a 2g AWD have a good way of removing the trans and keeping the engine mounted? Thanks.

Put it this way. Who has the fastest DSM on earth? Who built the tranny? Curt Brown runs a tranny built by Shep. Curt powershifts at 9800rpm. Who do you want to build your tranny?

Thats what I dont get. Why isnt Shep doing more Tranny work, Or he just doesnt Advertise it as much as TRE does???

I tell you what, once I scrape up enough money I'm going to get my tranny rebuilt by shep. my tranny has lost 5th gear and reverse as well as a notch 2nd gear.

TRE rebuilt my 90 two years ago. I've got 35K+ miles on it now and it's still as good as the day I got it. He had a 1 week turn around. I'm not sure if that's typical, but I was happy. My bill ran $1200 and I got a basic rebuild, double 2nd syncros, metal magnet, and EVO shift forks, and a mainshft? (needed for upgrading a 90 to double 2nd syncros). He even threw in another good VC because mine was toasted, for free. Answered all my questions. I can't complain.

My next one will go there.

For one thing, Shep has a full time job, outside of rebuilding DSM trannys.

Do a search for problems with TRE and Shep. That should help you to farther make up your mind.

I believe that shep had quit his regular job to focus more on his dsm shop/racing business.

for you guys who are packing ur trannys, dont use peanuts. incase u missed that part DONT USE PEANUTS. they crush and let stuff bounce around. go get a u haul box fill it 1 third of the way up with shreded news paper insert tranny and pack nice and tight with news paper, u can put a piece of plywood on the ends. the shreded paper doesnt move and it holds the tranny in the middle of the box. thats how tre shipped mine back to me. oh they wraped it in plastic too.

I have no gripes about my tranny from tre, except that when I got mine rebuilt with all there goodies it wasnt $1800 darn inflation.

TRE WILL rebuild a trans you send them. It's $500 for labor plus cost of parts. You can buy a rebuilt transmission from them for 1800. You can buy a NEW modified transmission for 2400.

I bought a New trans from TRE, I have nothing but compliments about it. Shifts beautifully :)

You people spouting numbers really need to get your prices and what they are for straight.

Carry on.

For those of you that are about to go with a FP3052 or similar turbo, get the trans done first. This was my mistake. I spent all the money I had on that damned FP3052 and a new ACT 2600 clutch and a day and a half later my car was back at AMS on a flat bed due to a blown trans and center diff. I think I got to hear the wastegate dump to the atmosphere maybe 5 times:cry:

Just for your info, here's what TRE quoted me for a rebuild of my 95 GSX AWD Tranny:

The basic transmission repair will cost around $1050. This will include:

**New improved high friction 1-5th synchros. These allow faster shifts at higher rpms.

**New 1st-2nd & 3rd-4th hub & sleeves. Shot peened for strength. No more shattered sleeves.

**New 1st-2nd & 3rd-4th forks. These are factory OEM.

**New modified double synchro 2nd gearset. This is a modified gearset will allow shifts above 9000rpm.

**New Input shaft bearings

**New intermediate shaft bearings

**New needle bearings under 1st -4th gears. 5th gear needle bearing is rarely wears out and is replaced if need be.

**New oil seals

**New synchro keys

**New synchro key springs

**New heavy duty Neodymium trash magnet, oil filter and magnetic drain plug. This really keeps the metal fragments out of the oil.

**New snap rings, roll pins, end nuts, bearing shims and all the other non-reusables that you would expect to be replaced in a quality rebuild.

**Enlarged oil passages offer longer transmission life. This makes for a cooler running transmission.

**All gears & shafts stress relieved and modified for durability.

**Additional machine work is also done that'll make it shift like it should have in the first place.

**It will not act like a typical DSM after we rebuild it.

So if your hard parts are in good shape, doesn't sound like a bad deal at all... Just thought i'd give you an actual number, instead of $500 labor plus parts

how much did you wind up spending???

having my tranny rebuilt with all of there gears adn goodies except the top speed 5th, becasue it wasnt avalble at the time, and with out there new shift rails same reason was 1600 shipped. the transmission had no 1st gear when I sent it in

See, this is why threads like this piss me off. Statements like that which have little or no relevance to the question at hand. Each tranny is different for each owner.

Simple fact is this. Both TRE and Shep do awesome work when it comes to trannies. If you are trying to choose between the two, you need to ask yourself (1) What you are using the car for, (2) What can you afford to spend, and (3) What kind of turn around and service before and after you expect to have.

Then you need to get quotes, and see what feels comfortable for you (do your own research), and then just pull the trigger.

We can piss in the wind all day about the accomplishments of either operation, and both John and Ming at TRE and Shep have outstanding accomplishments. You can't go wrong with either one.

I blew my tranny last spring. Got a new one and it's fine, but im gonna ne making more horses this summer, so I wanna strengthen up my tranny. Could anyone please post the websites for Shep and TRE? Thanks! :D

Would sheps $850 base rebuild, be enough tranny to support a mid to high 11 sec dsm, or would more upgrades be required? I hope to run low 12's on the 14b, w/ stock trans, but plan on refreshing the tranny to support a .50 trim to put me into the 11's, what mods would be nessesary to the trans? Thanks

When I had my trans rebuilt I had only started to hear things about Shep. TRE had been around for a long time and was in the process of a shop move. My trans went to TRE and cost me $1800 with the double second syncros, stronger shift forks, filter screans, and trash magnets. My out put shaft for the transfer case and 5th gear were shot. My cost included a input shaft socket in the transfer case for the new 23 count spline shaft TRE put in the transmission. I have about 5K on it and it still shifts great. I was hoping for the 10% taller 5th but my early 90 transmission case wouldn't allow. Jon and Ming are the Kings

well the time has come.. my tranny is taking a sh!t.. im in the process of getting my tranny rebuilt.. i really want some place local that specializes in dsm trannies but dont know where.. so i figured i rebuild my tranny first and just have a place put it in..

i am on a budget, yet need a trans to at least hold up for a low 12 sec car.. this is why sheps rebuilt is attracting me.. the price is nice and from this thread it seems like turn around is fast.. and thats also important..

however, dynatos , post on his quote from TRE is also attracting. i really dont want to spend more than $1000,.. is the list of services done to his tranny from TRE similar/better to that of the $900 rebuild from shep?

i am a newbie when it comes to trannies and i am hoping to get some feedback..

here is the situation with my car.. i have a 95 GSX.. just recently my tranny has been acting up.. bad.. 1-2 is really bad.. when in gear and driving.. it will SHAKE bad.. and eventually pop out of gear.. 3-5 arent as bad but they dont seem good.. when the clutch is engaged. (clutch not pressed) there is a lot of noise.. its louder than the engine and the exhaust.. a lot of friction sounding noise.. however wen i press teh clutch.. the noise completely dissapears.. and is quiet. and now there is a lot of fluid that has came out under the tranny..

wat u guys think i should do.. thanks..

My advice: stop driving it. Seriously. The more you drive this transmission, the more the rebuild is going to cost when you get it done. Shifter shaking and popping out of gear is a normal sign of excessive transmission wear/abuse. The friction noise sounds like it might be an issue with your clutch disc/pressure plate, possibly a throw-out bearing having a bad day; your mods list has a 2600, did you use the old metal-on-metal ACT throw-out bearing, or a plastic-sleeved OEM-style bearing (like the new Nachi bearings that ACT ships)?

Don't take the pricing you see on a website relating to servicing of a piece of your car as gospel. That's where the pricing *starts*. From TRE, it's $500 labor, plus the cost of any parts you're going to have to replace (which noone is going to know until the transmission is taken apart), plus the cost of upgrades. From Shep, it's $900 for a base set of labor and replacements/upgrades, and you pay for anything not covered by that "standard rebuild". For example, we just had a transmission rebuilt by TRE; when it arrived, Jon immediately recognized some common junkyard labelling on it, and when they got it apart, the center diff was pretty thoroughly trashed, indicating that the tranny had been thrown on there from a cheap source, just to get the car moving. Guess what? The original quoted price went up. ;)

Send a description of your problem to TRE and Shep, giving as many details as possible. Tell them any upgrades you'd like to do while they're in there (let's face it, you don't send a transmission to them and not get at least a few minor things done). Give them an idea of what you do with the car today, and what you're planning on doing down the road; horsepower goals, autocross/drag/road-race/etc. use, and so on. Let them give you suggestions, and rough estimates. You'll be surprised how close the estimates come back.

(As a side note: all this Shep vs. TRE stuff is really amusing, given how well the two shops themselves seem to get along...)

I was told 2400 for a rebuilt stock one, or 3K for a "new" one.

I sent it to shep, got the 895 rebuilt, and after he fixed the other problems I had (the reasons why I originally had the tranny looked at to be repaired) it came out to be 1200, including shipping.

My shep shifts smooth as can be, and I've never had a problem with it.

Shep is the way to go.

dude! list for a new trans FROM mitsu is like 1800 or so, belive me. I have it on paper from the dealership. And the dude I bought the trans from. Got a 15% Discount, and got it for 1500 or so. Then I bought it for 1250. Go to ur dealership. a trans might not be that Expensive, Compared to a rebuilt one from a trans shop.

^^ did you have to give the dealer a core ? LOL i dunno
So i can have my mechanic/closefriend get the new trans from dealer minus 20% i think thats his discount and sell the one on my car ?
