So I finally got my engine apart and here is the damage; 3 missing teeth on the timing belt, 6 inhalated exhaust valves, 1 really bad piston, 3 not-so-bad pistons. All of this is on a motor that has 11k miles on it! So, here is a little back ground info leading up to the event:

-Bought reman engine from CarKing in Ontario, CA
-Got everything installed and did 1500 mile break in
-Dyno tuned car at Tuning Technologies in Colton, CA
B16G running 18psi (280hp,275tq)
-At 10k miles, blew the head gasket and replaced with Cometic MLS
-1k miles later BADA-BOOMMMMMM! I wasn't even on it. I was getting off the highway on my way to work, pulled it out of gear to stop at the light and went from 3k rpm straight down! Didn't even make a noise loud enough to hear over the radio.

Anyone have any ideas of what could of caused this? Similar situations? Story time boys and girls.

Oh yeah! Got to love the Valve on the #2 cylinder that broke off and jammed the stem into the spark plug! Sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's awesome. I'd get a hold of the engine builders and see what they think.

Now thats some madness. I would think something went wrong when you replaced the head gasket. Maybe tensioned the belt wrong, put it back on backwards from what it was installed, things like that. But then again, I havent heard any good things about Carking.

I have a Karking motor in ours right now, could not be more happy. Who did the timing belt and head gasket? They would be the ones to throw a fit to.

It was a complete long block with all stock parts. Looking to see what I can do better this time!

I'm in the same boat! I bought a 420a shortblock from CarKing and I put the engine in myself, plus had my dad and his friend, both of which are certified mechanics, triple check all the timing components when I was done. Of course, 15k miles down the road, the timing belt snapped. It's been sitting in my yard for two weeks now. I can't even look at it I'm so disgusted.

I have a Karking, so far so good. First thing I did was replace the timing belt with an OEM one.

OP - What kind of timing belt did you use? Did you even buy a new one?

No, I didn't get a new one. I just used the one that came with it. I called and talked to them and they said that it is one that they consider to be "oem equivalent" Just the same with the head gasket that I blew.

There is nothing wrong with the oem timing belt. There are 800hp cars out there running it as well. The carbon kevlar one is okay if you don't mind spending like 200 bucks on a belt!

If your not running very large camshafts, or turning the engine at very high speeds, it dosen't matter how much HP your making, the stock belt will be perfectly fine.

Most of us aren't using very large camshafts requiring alot of seat pressure and heavy valvesprings, and how many of us turn past 10k? Stock belt wont see any added stress then in a completely OEM environment.

You replaced the HG with a cometic one, did you re-install everything correctly, i would personally have made sure the belt was OEM mitsu, not whatever junk they use, and believe me most aftermarket belts are JUNK. Cometic HG are junk also, so perhaps you don't mind using garbage components on your engine? A bit of research would have led you to understand why OEM belts are one of the most important things to use on an engine, as well as why Cometic HG's are junk, and any enthusiast does proper research before spending hours on labor so he/she knows it was done properly.

Its too bad this happened to you, and I hope it gets resolved at their cost. Just because they say its OEM equivilant dosen't mean for 1 second it is.

Sorry about your luck this kind of stuff is always disapointing, but remember you have to think, when parts break if its on the dyno, or on the street no matter whos fault it is, you have to remember 'thats racing'.

Hey, looks familiar!!! Check out my piston pic in my gallery (I don't know how to post it in this thread)

Mine was caused by a valve head that came off. No over revving, no belt skipping. It happened just cruising along with traffic and, like you, it made no noise or anything. The dash just lit up with warning lights as the engine quit and I coasted off the side of the road.

They were replacement valves, not OEM Mitsu, so I can only assume they were faulty. No, I didn't get any restitution from my head rebuilder as he knew the engine was modified and wouldn't warrantee anything.

I only use mitsu valves now and I hope to never have it happen again.
