A while back the engine in my 92tsi had a meltdown which turned out to be caused by a cam bearing going out. Anyway about a week ago i got a complete engine off an old friend who had totalled his tsi and heres my predicament I'm poor and been without my talon for way to long I'm not sure what kinda condition this new motor is in internally and i plan on rebuilding my old block (60,000 original miles) and cant afford to put a bunch of cash into both engines so I'm kinda thinking about just throwing this other engine in as is and saving the cash i would of spent to rebuild mine but i did spend 500 on this new one and don't want it to be like it should be performance and reliability wise. (BY RELIABILITY I MEAN AS RELIABLE AS ALL CONSTANT PROJECT DSMs ARE) YA GOTTA LUV 'EM :talon: :| Thanks a bunch for your input. justin

First and foremost this all depends on if you are doing the swap yourself. If you are, it might be worth while. If not, don't do it. It'll cost too much.

So assuming that you are doing it yourself there are more questions to ask.

1. Do you have other transportation besides your dead DSM?
  • If so then I'd just resell that engine you bought for $500 and use the cash towards rebuilding your dead one. You could sell the dead one but you won't get as much denero for it for the rebuild on the other engine.
  • If not, move on to #2.

2. What kind of condition is this purchased engine in?
  • If the compression is good and the engine runs well do the swap.

3. What are your goals? Do you need forged internals etc?
  • If not, and the new engine runs well, sell the old one and use the $ on mods/repairs.
  • If you do need forged internals, and don't have transportation, do the swap and save up for your future monster engine.

Those are the best options I see. Good luck on whatever you choose.

yes the talon is basically my only means of transportation except for a 88 corolla that the tranny is all but gone out on. i haven't done a compression test on the new motor as of yet. i got my motor out about 20 minutes ago without the help of anyone except advice from y'all. So that is what I'm gonna do right now I'll post the results. thanks Justin :talon:
