Let me first say that I don't have too much of a problem with this, it's when other people drive my car. I know the solution to this is to not let other people drive my car, but that isn't always possible.
When I'm slowing down, I downshift and let the engine help brake. Always. When other people drive my car they seem to coast to a stop with the clutch pressed in, or put it out of gear and slow down with only the brakes. When they do this, the engine will stall out and they'll have to pop the clutch to restart it while moving, or restart it with the key. The obvious solution to this is to always keep it in gear.
BUT...
This happened to me today when I was in 5th, went to downshift to 4th to pass someone, but didn't, and hesitated to put it in gear. It stalled out, but when I put it in 4th and let the clutch out, it restarted.
What I'm thinking is happening - is that when the car is in nuetral, the momentum of the car isn't keeping the engine revved up, and the rpms fall too much and the engine dies.
Again, this only seems to happen when it's left out of gear too long and it's just coasting.
The car idles just fine when it's stopped.
Is there a reason my engine is dieing in nuetral?
