Engine Smoking

Ok so sometimes when i take the parkway home(highway), and no one is around me, ill sometimes take it up to 100, and cruise at 100, for about 1/2 mile, and go back down to about 70. Soon i come to a light and have to stop, the engine smokes for about 30 seconds, and you can smell a burning. My engine has 139k miles on it.

Anyone know what this can be? I been in other cars and done the same thing, and nothing happens

Does the smoke come from under the hood or from the tail pipe?

What color is it?

Do you see any particular area it's coming from?

As you can imagine, there is no catch all answer: smoke could be a few dozen different things.

First off since you dont have anything in your profile, I'm going to assume you have a turbo DSM, also this may not be it, but its easy to check, and is a common problem(most likely everyone on here has had it)

Does it smoke a little bit all the time,almost to the point where it isn't noticeable?. Because one of the most common(and annoying) oil leaks our cars get, are on the oil return line/pipe. These leaks can drip down on to the down pipe and smoke. It should smoke all the time, and you'll see little wisps of smoke coming from under the exhaust manifold. And doing a 70->100 pull would really get the oil flowing in the return tube, making it very noticeable. This can be easily checked by crawling underneath your car and checking the pipe for leaks. It's easy to find, its a solid metal tube with a flex section, it comes down from the bottom of your turbo, and bolts directly to you oil pan. Each end should have a gasket, and copper washers and should be tight(but not too tight).

If it is your oil return, you can buy an OEM replacement,or an after market one from most of the vendors listed on this site.
