I have been searching through the forums and I have a few questions about what to replace on an engine rebuild.

1)Do the head studs need to be replaced along with the main studs? I believe the answer is yes, but not positive.

2)Should every pulley be replaced if the car has 130k?

3)Should I replace the oil and water pumps just to be on the safe side?

4)Are there any other miscellaneous things I am forgetting? New hoses and lines? Rod bolts?

i would go with a set of arp head studs and i would go ahead and replace the waterpump its only like $25 and any autoparts store, the pulleys dont need to be replaced unless there is something wrong with them, and replace any hoses that look like they need replacement, while your at go ahead and elim the balance shafts. i wouldnt replace the oil pump unless you have been having problems with it because it is inside the front cover and you would have to get a whole front cover. just my $.02 good luck with your build

You can get kits around on a few of the DSM web sites. I would def replace the water and oil pumps and your timing belt. 1G studs are not stretch type like 2G. If there isn't any visible stretching in the threads they should be fine.

The more new parts the better. Pulleys are not necessary. However, I think the water pump, oil pump, rear main seal, and all the gaskets and seals you can fine to replace are manditory. Also, replace the timing assembly. I would also say upgrade to the ARP head studs. The main studs dont necessarily need to be replaced unless there is something wrong with the ones you have, or a looking for some serious horsepower.

Are you replacing the pistons/rods? If not, then I definetly wouldn't bother with the main studs.

About the rebiuls kits, there are two that I know of, and both come with new pistons. The topline kit has bigger pistons so you would have to get the block bored out. It also comes with every seal or gasket you can think of. SBR sells most everything you would want individually, or in the topline rebuild kit.

The engine is being rebuilt with 2nd gen pistons and first gen rods. The goal is for 300-350 whp range. At that range, I do not believe ARP hardware is required, correct? I know I need to retap the head studs and main studs just to clean them out, but can I reuse the studs or order new ones. I read you were supposed to replace them, but that could have been for 2nd gen motors. So does that help any with suggestions?

as far as the head studs go, arp's arent much more $$ than OEM replacements, so you might as well get arp there for the extra security...thats what i would do it your situation

if you got the engine apart i would at least get the head machined and the valves re cut theres no sense waiting until you have no compression to do it. cost me 175 they cut nes seats resurfaced the head and it turned out excellent.
