So im gonna be rebuilding a 98 GST, this is my first engine rebuild, i have my list of parts i need but i was just wondering what all machine work needs to be done. I know i need to hone the cylinders out but thats about it. I have also heard of having the rotating assembly balanced ( Does this need to be done on all new rods? ), head being machined etc..

I want to start getting a quote from shops around town.

What all machine work needs to be done on an engine rebuild?

And anyone in the phoenix/tucson AZ area know of any good repuable shops?

Thank you anyone that can help me!:thumb:

it depends on whats wrong with the engine really. if your crank and rods are in spec you could get away with the block decked, cylinder hone, valve job, and head resurfaced. you'd be looking at about 100-550+$. depending on where you go and what needs to be done.

If your walls are ok and in spec..just a line hone.
If your walls are pretty beat up..you'll need a bore which will call for oversized pistons.
Hot tank is always a plus, micro polish the crank, resurface the block and head.
If you want, an angle valve job wouldn't hurt..probably the priciest machine labor you can get done.
And replace the valve seals.
Balancing of the motor is good, but if your not planning on pushing your motor to the limits and be revving pass 8k...then it's not necessary.

I spent $500 on all my machine work.

-hot tank
-micro polish
-3 angle valve job
-deck and resurface
-hone
-assemble/diassembly of head and short block

oh in that case you probably want new pistons and rods? if so id get some over sized pistons and piston rings, bore the block out. measure the crank to see if its in spec. if it is, id just polish it...better yet just get a clintons repair manual. it has everything you would need to know about rebuilding an engine.

^^ beat me LOL

Hot tanking is always the more the merrier!! I've been quoted 350-550 locally for rotating assembly. Just some prices to think about never know what might be marred up in there..
