So engine was making a knocking noise, looked into it seemed like everyone said drive for a mile see if goes away. it did ran fine for 2 more miles parked in garage, put gas in today and started it now more of a tick noise from engine block. so right away I checked oil. dipstick had a good amount on so wiped it off, then checked oil. three times each time came out dry. what would cause the oil to disappear so fast only less than 1000 miles since change. I assumed lack of oil is causing the noise, but not sure why there is a lack of oil??

Could be coming back out the dipstick or oil cap.

But there has to be a leak somewhere in order for the oil to just go away. Check the oil pan and see if there is any loose bolts or a bad gasket. Did you put your drain plug back in and torque it properly?

Another common spot is the valve cover & camshaft seals (half moon).

Is the dip stick completely dry? If so that's at least three quarts low. I had a motor that would only leak under pressure, so there wouldn't really be a puddle. Get under your car and check to see if there is oil on the exhaust/undercarriage.

no smoke, did 4 quarts, and yeah there is oil underneath. where should I start to look for the leak. and I guess that makes sense about being under pressure I didn't even think of that.

Fill it back up with oil and start the car, let it idle and watch for leaks. Like johnny96tsi said it could be a leak under pressure. Might not want to go drop $50-60 on oil if it's just gunna leak out. If it was me I'd get a cheap brand, run it while you look for a leak and when you find the leak do a full oil change again with your normal oil. Just my 2 cents though. Good luck finding the leak!

If you can find the general area of the leak, clean it up then run some cheap oil and get under and around the motor. If you can't tell the general area just clean up the old oil as much as u safely can on the whole engine. Cleaning up the general area cleaning is just a time saving method i use because i have chased a few leaks in my time. I have one right now matter of fact LOL. I would not recommend pressure washing though since a leak is a leak is a leak. If oil can get out. Then water can possibly get in.

this is a little harder to miss on dsms, but make sure that you didnt stack your oil filter on top of the o ring gasket from the previous oil filter. If it hasnt happened to you before, they can stick and get left behind.

I'll re check everything tomorrow in the light but if leaking you think I'd see a puddle somewhere as well.

I can only recommend so much without having the car in front of me.

If something happened while you were driving, when the oil is moving around in the motor, and all of it leaked out, chances are you won't have a puddle by the time you get back home from the "mile or two" people told you to drive.. When your car is already ticking enough for you to think "hey, something isn't right."
