All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Another thing id look at is possibly a bad clutch release bearing/clutch.. Sounds like it could possibly be that by what you are explaining. Mine is doing about the same thing, ive just been procrastinating a little bit cause im not looking forward to dropping the trans.

+1 for this.

Start simple and work your way down. Might as well drop the trans and check the condition of your clutch.

Ok guys, need some help. My 95 Talon TSI AWD is making a weird noise when accelerating @ 3000 rpm. It sounds like its coming from behind the intake manifold. My car has a 6 bolt swap and it runs, boosts, and idles fine. Just had it tuned. But when the tach reads 3k the noise appears and it causes the car to vibrate in every gear but as soon as it goes past 3000 it goes away and drives fine. Any ideas?

check for a broken exhaust hanger or possibally maybe the motor mount. I cant see it being the clutch of anything of that sort if it sounds like its behind the intake manifold. Also check the intake manifold support bracket... May have lost the bolt or the bracket may have broke

does your car have the balance shafts still?

Yes it does still have the balance shaft. But i made sure that was lined up with everything else that needed to be lined up when i changed the belts.

UPDATE Ok guys, found out that the manifold stay was missing 2 screws. That's what was making the rattling noise. So i replaced the screws and hopefully that did it. Will know better when I take it for a spin. Thanks to all for the insights. It was very helpful. DSM's rock!!!!! :rocks: :hellyeah:

do you have any pic of that manifold? mine does the same thing but only hear hissing sound..... i can even hear the sound from the interior with windows closed. also, little shaking when cruising..,...
i really appreciate when you do...

thanks.

awesommeee.......

Ok guys, the rattling is gone but the engine vibration is still there @ 3k rpm .:sosad:
Anyone have a clue why its doing this? Transfer case maybe?

My mani is a 1g. And i also hear the hissing sound from inside the cabin, but only when i boost. Yours do that too?

i have 1g mani and 1g TB too..... i hear hissing sound at idle too..... is this normal in 1g mani+ tb tho.....i did boostleak test and found nothing....

is your car vibrating on idle?
btw, do you have stock diff in your car? stock diff is common to break when you loose traction with wheel spin....

I dont know about that hissing being normal. My car does'nt vibrate on idle. And as far as i know my diff is stock and i've never really lost any traction. My car is AWD and ive never really tried to spin my tires :D

I drive a 96 Talon Esi (2g) My problem started around two weeks ago. It's a loud spinning/grinding sound, while crusing around town my clutch lost pressure. Took it back to the house, opened the clutch fluid reservoir, dry as a bone.... put some fluid in, bled it. Got the pressure back, but I noticed it was still leaking from somewhere.... now whenever I start it up it makes a horrible loose grinding noise. If I keep the clutch pedal in it stops, as soon as its released it starts back. After the motor warms up its not so bad, and only happens when down shifting. I'm thinking maybe it's the throw out bearing, considering I put a new clutch in it (in my driveway:hmm:) but I've been told some other opinions. Just wanted to know what you guys thought.

yup sounds exactly like your throw out bearing. And with your loss of clutch pressure and it leaking your clutch master cylinder is going out. check underneith your dash by your clutch pedal and see if you can see and fluid leaking than its for sure your master cylinder

If there is any leak on the master cylinder, it would be more obvious on the firewall.. Overtime the paint will start to peel off after long exposure to the fluid.. By the way, i dont think its the throw out bearing, if it is then it would be grinding while the clutch pedal is pressed..

if it was the TOB it would make a noise WHEN the clutch is pressed in... if it goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed, its more likely the input shaft bearing in the trans itself... the TOB is only being used when the clutch is being used/pressed down, otherwise its just sitting on the shift fork.

trust me, i just did this exact same thing a few months ago. i have a thread on here, check it out in my created threads--

^ I wish I would have found your post before making this one. This is exactly what my car is doing! Even the problem shifting from 1st to 2nd and reverse. So you have convinced me ths the input shaft bearing. So my next question is how did you go about replacing it? I have the repair manual for the car, but I cant seem to find anything in it. I just want to get my ducks in a row before I start pulling thigs appart. Im going to have to do this in my driveway and my work week is pretty hectic, so I pretty much have one shot to get this done.

(Also) If I keep driving it the way it is, what are the chances that my car might fail?

Hey Guys,

I looked on the forums regarding my issue but have not seen any 'exact' issues like mine, so wanted to get some advice on what the problem could be.

I have a 97 GST.

The car starts up fine without any problems. The car drives fine in 1st gear.

However, in 2nd-5th gears when the boost kicks in, the car exhaust sounds like a lawn-mower, and the RPM's jump and the car sputters and/or shakes.

My first thought were the spark plugs, but I figure it would not cause the exhaust to sound like a lawnmower.

Thx in advance for the advice,

brian
